US, Allies Press Afghanistan On Christian Convert

Author: Paul Eckert Source: Reuters

Title: US, ALLIES PRESS AFGHANISTAN ON CHRISTIAN CONVERT
The United States and three NATO allies with troops in Afghanistan urged the Kabul government on Tuesday to respect the religious freedom of an Afghan convert to Christianity who faces the death penalty there.
The United States, which counts Afghan President Hamid Karzai as a key ally in the region, raised the case with visiting Afghan Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah, calling on Kabul to uphold Afghan citizens' constitutional right to choose their faith.
"We hope that the Afghan constitution is going to be upheld and in our view, if it's upheld, then of course he'll be found to be innocent," said Nicholas Burns, the State Department's third-ranked diplomat.
An Afghan judge said on Sunday a man named Abdur Rahman had been jailed for converting from Islam to Christianity and could face the death penalty if he refused to become a Muslim again. Sharia, or Islamic law, stipulates death for apostasy.

I'm not looking at this from religious standpoint but political and diplomatic-Americans DIED to install this government??? Wonder how many of Bush's Christian fanatic supporters have heard about this? I hope some Rep. Congressman decides to make this a big news getting story.

I just read a book about the Gnostic Gospels which talked about early Christian martyrs. Their martyrdom was a good recruiting tool apparently. Folks thought that if someone believed in something that passionately, it must be true. Being a martyr for Christianity was a good thing because it was seen to bring more people to the "true faith". Arrested Christians were expected and encouraged to allow themselves to be martyred. Many of the early gnostics thought this was rubbish, but the early Christian church didn't approve of the gnostics because they weren't bringing in as many converts. The early gnostics thought more along the lines of "what good are you to your god if you're dead?" The early church eventually branded all the gnostic thought as heresy, but didn't want those guys made martyrs because, well, they knew what a good recruiting tool that was.
Even if this man did convert back to Islam, would they/we/god believe him? Would the rest of the world ever know?
Converting to Christianity is a crime in Afganistan. Not being a Christian is considered a crime by many folks who call themselves Christian. Maybe this story will highlight those similarities and show them how mis-guided they are; show them how horrible it is to be judged for one's religion; make them more tolerant toward folks who turn away from their religion. Or maybe it will reinforce for them how "evil" all the "other" religions are. The latter, is my bet.

I have read the Koran from front to back. The book to me is even more confussing then the bible...but that is a different topic.
In the Koran it states that if one was to choose a religion such as Christianity you will have the chance of converting back to Islamic or you have choosen Death. Pagans don't get that option, we are given the death sentance right away...why...because according to the Koran you cannot trust one that has turned their back on God, they will only do so again once you look away, so it is better to kill them.
The military is very careful, if anyone that is not Christian wears their symbol of faith over there they are told to keep it hidden for their own safty. They make sure it doesn't slip out from under their uniform or they have it in a pocket.
It is sad that there are any religions being persecuted but in other parts of the world Christianity is not the main religion like it is over here. And if some of the Christians had that power over here I could see myself and friends being drug to court to only find my next journey starting...death.

what this man must be going through. I am not a fan of Islam personally, because a woman stands no chance of being anything but a possession. Christianity also holds women as lesser beings, but it's a little more tolerable. The unfortunate thing is that most of these hardcore religions would just as soon kill us too. I don't understand why it is that important to everybody else who or how a person worships their diety (s) . Or who another may share their bedroom with. None of that stuff makes any sense to me, but when I read the papers or hear the news, I see it everyday. Someday humanity may just realize that our creator (s) made all kinds of people, all kinds of animals and we were all placed on this one planet together, and the only way things will go smoothly is if we decide to put aside our differences and work towrds the good of everybody. It deosn't seem that many religions practice what the preach.

Even thought he converted to Xtianity, I feel that he should be able to follow ANY religion of his choosing. They REALLY would have freaked out if he "woke up" and decided to be Pagan, wouldn't they have? This just shows you how dangerous islam (and christianity) can be. I sure hope that they let this poor guy go.... it is so unfair. I jsut hope that this radical islam NEVER takes hold here in the USA. I doubt it will, because I don't think that the US population would tolerate it's horsrcrap, especially the women of this country. Take heed, all - if it can happen there, it can happen here! ( you know what I mean....)

Just a comment to another comment... Considering having been told by guys five years older than me at my old Christian school that they would stop punching and kicking me if I stopped being a witch...and I didn't... Considering my parents forced me onto lithium and other drugs to make me "not be a crazy witch person" until I converted...and I didn't... Considering the death threats, the hate mail, the sheer hatred I have endured... I have NEVER converted. If that meant I had to die for the Lady, I would. Don't underestimate us posters. Some of us are willing to do exactly what that man is doing.

So it works out that we've sacrificed thousands of our own young to uphold the Taliban's law and culture and give Muslims the freedom to butcher one another on their own terms? When we provoke the next war with Iran, they will come looking for conscripts. I will go to Canada or Leavenworth before I take up arms for their fundamentalists, or our own.

The preservation of rights should begin at home. While I do feel sorry for this man because he converted to xtianity-- the same rights should be adhered to here at home- for those wanting to convert FROM xtianity. I hope he can escape death and they can help him- he should not be made a special case example only because he chose their religion, risking Sharia law to do it. I'm sure his conversion was genuine. However, I wonder if the support is.

"It is not acceptable that our soldiers should put themselves at risk or even sacrifice their lives for a fundamentalist, illiberal regime," Cossiga wrote.
So, then, no soldiers should fight, because THIS is a fundamentalist, illiberal regime.
"German bishops will try to ensure Christians in Islamic countries enjoy the same rights as Muslims have in our country."
Oh, so then they should just deny the Christian of all his rights and pretend they aren't, cuz that's what the Germans do.
I hate this ruling. I really do. But we gave Afghanistan back to its people and now it's there problem. We can't tell them what to do anymore. I do, however, hope someone knocks some sense into them. I am just concerned that, perhaps, if the man had become Hindu or Pagan or whatever else instead of Christian, that the rest of the world would've turned a blind eye.

I can not imagine the pain this person is going through... to know that you could lose your life for finding a new faith. If that was the case here, how many Wiccans would be in the same boat??
