Buddha Statue Villain Assassinated

Author: Amir Shah   Source: The Scotsman, UK

Title: BUDDHA STATUE VILLAIN SHOT DEAD

A former Taleban official who oversaw the destruction of the 1,500-year-old Bamiyan Buddhas in 2001 was assassinated in Afghanistan yesterday.

Maulavi Mohammed Islam Mohammadi, who was the Taleban's governor of Bamiyan province when the giant fifth-century statues were blown up in March 2001, was killed on his way to Friday prayers in the capital, Kabul.

An international outcry followed the destruction of the Buddhas, which were chiseled into a cliff and famed for their size and location along the ancient Silk Road linking Europe and Central Asia.

Who says this guy was shot b/c of the statues? He was a politician in a volatile region - if someone thought he was a 'collaborator' with the US, that could have been motive enough.
It could have been some local inter-tribal thing, someone else wanting to gain power, or whatever. I doubt anyone really felt that strongly about the statues - enough to kill someone in retribution, five years after the fact. But I could be wrong.

Could he have stopped their destruction? Are you kidding? Anymore than they could have stopped the public execution of women caught wearing nail polish, or outside without a burka or male relative.

Fighting fascism like the Taliban is alot easier said than done, and it's alot easier to do before it takes root. I think anyone caught up in that kind of trap has to have a lot of courage to defy the system, because it will mean their life - and possibly their families as well - if they get caught. Not everyone is cabable of that kind of bravery, but it would be nice if they were, hmm?

Blessed BE!

Apparently, the whole story behind this isn't here. If he had wanted to save the statues, no doubt they would've shot him anyway. As it is, he was killed because he didn't protest the action. I hope they can be put back together. And that the Taliban can one day be erased from the world.

Now only if the US would actually commit a sizable force to Afghanistan to clean out the rest of the garbage...
