Wiccan Soldiers Celebrate In Afghanistan

Author: Canadian Press Source: Toronto Star

Title: WICCAN SOLDIERS CELEBRATE
Members of the Wiccan religion celebrated the arrival of spring outside the Christian fellowship centre at the NATO military base here.
Canadian Maj. Malcolm Berry smiles as he recalls being approached a few weeks ago by a group of soldiers of the Wiccan faith – a neo-pagan religion strongly tied to nature.
"They wanted to welcome the spring in a ceremony where they are very thankful to Mother Earth and the new moon with pagan prayers," said Berry, the senior chaplain for Task Force Afghanistan.

That is so awesome that they would have such a service. I am currently stationed in Kabul, Afghanistan right now and have heard of other such ceremonies. When I first arrived last June I missed a Summer Solstice festival in Bagram Air Base by one day. We haven't had any pagan ceremonies in Kabul, but I have not had anyone act upset with me over being a pagan (though the chaplain is overly friendly) . It is nice to see how the world is changing and more people are coming to accept those who are different from them.

As an Army soldier, I was very happy to read that we are breaking through! I also asked to pray during basic training. I was interrupted purposely by those who had misconceptions and no respect or tolerance for any other beliefs other than their own. I was later allowed to go to a hill with a fellow soldier of Christian faith and pray there. There were stares, the usual questions, and crude comments. I am stationed in Missouri and there has been a local group on post for soldiers in training. Believe me, there arent any smiles from Chaplains. I pray that as times marches forth, the whole world will know Wicca and its true meaning. Blessed Be

It is slowly taking place that we are making our mark. The next move will be the Pentacle on headstones. Hang in there Pagan community, we are getting there. The Goddess and Gods are starting to smile for their children.

I truly never thought I'd see the day that a Christian chaplain of *any* nation's military would willingly, graciously -- heck, apparently *enthusiastically* -- offer celebration space to Wiccan airmen, sailors, marines, or soldiers.
This brings tears to my eyes. It's almost unbelievable.
As Paul Simon wrote, these are the days of miracles and wonders.

The only thing that would have made the matter better would have been if a American chaplin was so understanding. It is time that all religions be treated with respect. It is great that Wiccans can freely and openly practice our religion in other countries. Wish it could be the same here in the good old U.S.A., since thats what our government says we are fight for.

I am greatful to see that our Wiccan Sisters and Brothers are being allowed to celebrate their faith and keep the Ostara Sabbat in Kandahar...
I will be even more greatful when the U.S. Government allows the Pentacle and other Pagan Symbols to be inscribed upon the headstones of our fallen Pagan Sisters and Brothers...
May the Triple Goddess and the Triple God guide their path to the wisdom of including and honoring everyone's Spiritual Beliefs and Symbolism...
