Secret Rivers Found In Antarctic

Author: Helen Briggs Source: BBC News

Title: SECRET RIVERS FOUND IN ANTARCTIC
Antarctica's buried lakes are connected by a network of rivers moving water far beneath the surface, say UK scientists.
It was thought the sub-glacial lakes had been completely sealed for millions of years, enabling unique species to evolve in them.
Writing in the journal Nature, experts say international plans to drill into the lakes may now have to be reviewed.
Any attempts to drill into one body of water risks contaminating others.
"What this paper shows is that not only could you contaminate a lake, you could contaminate the whole drainage system," lead author Duncan Wingham, of University College London, told the BBC News website.
The sub-glacial lakes of Antarctica are regarded as "time capsules" of the period when the continent began to freeze over.

According to the theory of continental drift, Antarctica was once somewhere else. It was completely ice free. Consequently, it had many life forms, rivers and lakes, and all the features of any other land mass.
I find the comments on pollution interesting because of the current debate about global warming. As concerned about the issue as I am, I am also reminded of a comment made by a professor of mine when I was an undergraduate. He said that they pollute themselves out of existance. They use up the nutrients in the soil, dump tons of waste products into the atmosphere and finally, unable to survive in the environment they have created, they die out. New species of trees move in, continuing the cycle. There seems to be a parallel here. My deepest concern is whether we have the political will to do something about it.

Mother nature has a source of regenerating this planet, a source from which this process begins. The Antarctic is inhospitable (m.s.) for flesh and blood for a reason. Science needs to respect this and leave it alone.

Ok, so what are they saying here? More research is needed because its ok to contaminate one lake but now that its more then one, the plan needs to be reviewed? That's the dumbest thing I have heard yet this week. It shouldn't be ok to contaminate even one of those lakes. For pete sakes people, just leave well enough alone! Are we so full of ourselves that we can't even leave one pristine body of water alone without getting our grubby hands on whatever is in it???
My goodness.

... (no pun intended) but useless without a map of where the lakes and rivers are.

the don't find oil under those bodies of water. If so, we can kiss them good-bye.
