Fossil Finds Show Antarctica Could Have Been Dino Lost World

Author: Lee Bowman   Source: Knox News (TN)

Title: FOSSIL FINDS SHOW ANTARCTICA COULD HAVE BEEN DINO LOST WORLD

Researchers working thousands of miles apart in Antarctica found fossils of two new species of dinosaurs in less than a week's time, the scientists announced Thursday.

Both specimens - one a smaller carnivore cousin of the tyrannosaurs, the other an early member of the plant eating sauropods - came from sites on the continent that have yielded dinosaur fossils in the past.

But the finds by expeditions supported by the National Science Foundation give new evidence that the now frozen continent supported a diverse population of dinosaurs from 200 million to 65 million years ago.

These are Paleontologists. They INVENTED the term Pangea. Of course they "heard of it." They are not implying that it is surprising that they found fossils in Antartica. They are simply saying that they have found NEW, as in previously undocumented, species in Antartica. That and the fact that excavating anything in the now frozen continent is pretty damned DIFFICULT makes the find significant.

And its pretty damned cool that they can find anything underneath all the snow and ice. It makes you wonder what else is under there waiting to be found.

Haven't these people ever heard of Pangea (sp?) ? If all the coninents were connected at one time, I doubt that the dinosaurs were going to stop, turn around and say, "Woops, sorry Bill. We can't go there, that's going to be Anarctica one day". *Sigh* Sometimes I wonder...

A little late isn't it? Discovery ran a special "Walking with Dinosaurs" three or so years ago (I own a copy) that had an entire episode on the critters in Antartica and how in the warmer seasons it was a lush place filled with rather cute dinosaurs as well as goodly number of some big nasty buggers. Theropods included.
