Vienna Festival Celebrates Solstice

Author: Boyd and Ruth Johnson Source: The Arizona Republic (AZ)

Title: VIENNA FESTIVAL CELEBRATES SOLSTICE
We were reading Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code in Vienna last summer. As we walked around that marvelous city, we chanced upon a modern-day enactment of traditions he describes.
Thousands of Viennese were assembled in a plaza, witnessing an outdoor Mass to the sounds of brass bands and chants. Onlookers lined the curbs.
We spoke with an Austrian woman decked out in a festive forest-green dirndl. She told us that this was an annual festival that coincided with the summer solstice in June.

Is this called reporting?
"Modern-day enactment of traditions [Dan Brown] describes [in 'The da Vinci Code']" - I thought Dan Brown was a thriller writer, not a folklore researcher.
"[A participant] told us that this was an annual festival that coincided with the summer solstice in June" - which festival? what's its name?
From what I can gather, it is a city procession with Christian overtones, apparently honouring a saint: it could be Saint John the Baptist (he's celebrated in the Orthodox world on the 24th of June) or some other saint known for curing the plague!
But this I liked most of all: "When the ritual ended, people swarmed to the trees and tore off branches or leaflets. We decided that we should have one also, so we went up and collected a leaflet in honor of the rites." - great! go tear a leaf from the tree even if you don't know why you do it!
There are too many people who travel through the world seeing things they don't understand and not trying to find out what those things are about; what's worse, they pass this "knowledge" on - this is how Dracula was born!
