Obit: Holocaust Survivor and Nazi Hunter Simon Wiesenthal

Author: Danica Kirka, Associated Press Source: Tampa Bay Online

Title: HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR AND NAZI HUNTER SIMON WIESENTHAL DEAD AT 96
Simon Wiesenthal, the Holocaust survivor who helped track down Nazi war criminals following World War II, then spent the later decades of his life fighting anti-Semitism and prejudice against all people, died Tuesday. He was 96.
Wiesenthal, who helped find one-time SS leader Adolf Eichmann and the policeman who arrested Anne Frank, died in his sleep at his home in Vienna, said Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean and founder of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles.
"I think he'll be remembered as the conscience of the Holocaust. In a way he became the permanent representative of the victims of the Holocaust, determined to bring the perpetrators of the greatest crime to justice," Hier told The Associated Press.
A survivor of five Nazi death camps, Wiesenthal changed his life's mission after the war, dedicating himself to tracking down Nazi war criminals and to being a voice for the 6 million Jews who died during the onslaught. He himself lost 89 relatives in the Holocaust.
Wiesenthal spent more than 50 years hunting Nazi war criminals, speaking out against neo-Nazism and racism, and remembering the Jewish experience as a lesson for humanity. Through his work, he said, some 1,100 Nazi war criminals were brought to justice.

Wild Huntsman (Toronto, Ontario) - Email Me

Simon Wiesenthal was one of the giants of our time. He experienced a hell on earth and then turned that horrific experience into a lifelong mission to lessen evil on the earth, to make sure that we never forget what happened. Since then, everyone who has ever suffered an eviction likes to try and compare their suffering against the Nazi death machine, every bad leader gets compared to Hitler and every minute act of suppression to the Nazis. He was right, such comparisons trivialize the holocaust, when so many died that the ovens didn't stop burning for years. We have seen nothing since that compares to the scope and scale of the massacre. In a few years, we will assuredly be able to say that all the Nazis who took part are dead, tragically, most will have died after living a good long life, probably in a prosperous neighbourhood. Their legacy lives on, as hateful thugs continue to attack everyone who is different, especially jews. Everyone who is of a different faith has experienced the bigotry of someone 'mainstream' who despises others. It all hurts, but thanks in part to Wiesenthal's life's work, we won't have to experience what happened to him. For that, I thank him and bless his memory.

Aidan Odinson (Collingdale, Pennsylvania) - Email Me

This was a man who had literally lived through hell.
His quest was simple: he sought to bring criminals to justice.
He also sought to insure that people were educated about what had happened.
He did not seek revenge, but justice - that can be seen not only in those he pursued, but also in the cases which he chose *not* to pursue.
He made that his life's work.
A man I admired.
