Clever Ravens

Author: Manfred Dworschak   Source: der Speigel

Title: CLEVER RAVENS

Ravens can toboggan, ride other animals and spy on their enemies. Their life as cadgers stealing prey from wolves, eagles and bears has made them outstandingly intelligent. But do ravens know what they're doing and why? Austrian biologists want to find out.

Those ravens! Their newest form of entertainment is wild boar rodeo. Biologist Mareike Stöwe swears she often sees ravens trotting through the enclosure on the backs of irritated wild boars.

"Ravens like to make an impression," Stöwe says. The birds are always out to perform unusual tricks likely to impress their kin. Dangling head-down from a branch is another popular past-time of theirs.

Ravenologists always have something to laugh about.

are the names I've given to the two ravens that sit in my maple tree next to my house. Those two old gossips (worse than any two old ladies sitting around drinking tea and knitting) are ready to tell me everything that's happened when I get back from work.

...And quoth the Raven, 'Nevermore'.

I have never had the honor to have an encounter with a raven up close

but I do honor their presence with a hello when I hear them flying over the forest.

I adore crows and blue jays. :)

This is truly a wonderful article and is proof that we don't know the animal world as well as we like to think.

I Live In the Pygmy Forest Of Northern Ca. ,
And Ravens Surround Me, And My House ; I Have A Few , That Have A Relationship With Me ; I Speak To Them In Old Faery Tongue , And They Talk Back , Not Just In Caws , But A Variety Of Sounds ; I Have Personally Seen
Their Intelligence , And Trickster Habits ;

Yet The Most Amazing Interaction , Was One Night , During This Last Winter , When I Heard A Noise On The Deck Outside My House , And Opened The Door To Find Raven Sitting There , Wanting To Talk !!!

( At , Of Course , Within Minutes Of Midnight)

Swiftly Flying Raven (Redding, California) - Email Me

In the Northern Sierra/Southern Cascade mountains around Susanville and Redding (Northern California) live many ravens. My Indian name translates to my Witchvox account name, so I always watch them; I'm sure they are manifestations of the Raven deity! Beyond intelligence, Soul. Ravens are so synchronistically entwined with me, I even married one! My wife legally changed her first name to Raven decades before I met her, and I was in love with her before I knew her name (yes, love at first sight) ! I feel truly blessed by the Raven deity!

Blessed Be!

A Whole New Dimension On The Term, "bird Brain".. Apr 14th. at 9:55:36 pm EDT

bigcat (peoria, Illinois) - Email Me

Birds like crows, ravens, parrots and other species have proven to be much more intelligent than most people have suspected.
And as for playing tricks, speaking, opening locks and figuring puzzles, monkeys, chimps and apes have nothing on them.
So the Trickster reputation is well deserved.

I used to do wildlife rescue, and I've had the opportunity to nurse a couple of corvids back to health (a crow and a magpie.) If you've just seen them in the wilds, let me tell you - there is a very good reason that Raven is identified as a trickster!

My Friends!! Apr 14th. at 7:27:18 pm EDT

Aritimi Morgana (RotterdamJct/Schdy/Scotia, New York) - Email Me

I love them, although some of their diet is not the most pleasant, but I get a charge out of them all the same. Ravens, crows, i like them both. I have a strong affinity for them, considering my fondness for collecting shiny objects, string, what have you. They seem to like me too, for I've had many a close encounters with the birds. I consider them my spiritual guides. I even had one steal half my lunch one time, in college. The fellow must've been watching me for some time before swooping down and nabbing my other sandwich half. He then flew over to the nearest lightpole and proceeded to eat the purloined sandwich, occasionally looking down at me. For my part, I was caught between swearing and laughing; my friends were howling with laughter. I've seen them doing the tobogganing routine myself, in my own backyard on occasion. It was a riot. There were 3 of them taking turns at it, judging each other's performance. Wished I'd recorded it.

I Loves Me Some Ravens! Apr 14th. at 7:04:44 pm EDT

ElspethR (Houston, Texas) - Email Me

They have held my regard since first hearing the storied my grandparents told me of the "Tower Ravens" when they visited London many years back. And my patroness deity is none other than Morrighan, funny how that turned out, no? ;)
There are a few around my area, and it always makes my day when I see them cavorting through the air. Or when I get to hear them calling across the trees.
I loved that PBS nature show that was all about them and showed the raven that ambled up a hill and deliberately rolled down the snowy embankment - and then walked up again to repeat several times! :) He (she?) let out a little self-satisfied-seeming 'squawk' as it shook itself off each time.
Ravenwing blessings all!
