Austrian Hogwarts An International Attraction

Author: David Hill   Source: Wiener Zeitung

Title: AUSTRIAN HOGWARTS AN INTERNATIONAL ATTRACTION

Klagenfurt. An Austrian school for aspiring wizards and witches that became a hit when it added a Harry Potter course to its syllabus is now bringing its message of magic to the world - but that does not mean Carinthia’s politicians are safe.

"Wizardry is very close to nature and is in no way a form of religion,” said school director Andreas Starchel, originally a Carinthian IT expert who now goes by the name of Grand Wizard Dakaneth.

"The school’s aim is to pass on witches’ and wizards’ ancestral knowledge from the druid tradition which is gradually being forgotten,” he added.

NO To Pagan Inquisition! Jun 2nd. at 3:44:56 pm EDT

Yes, the Harry Pooter series constitutes a work of fiction.

But it's also more than that. I't MYTHOLOGY. Just like Star Wars.

Just like the old stories from every culture about the doings of gods goddesses and heroes.

Or do you really believe that Romulus in fact was raised by a wolf? That spiders are descended from a human weaver-woman who offended Athena with her superior skill?

No, the Harry Potter series doesn't teach the techniques of magick we use in the real world. But what does that matter?

What it does teach is that there is Good, and there is Evil, that Evil often masquerades as Good, and that Good must oppose Evil or perish.

It teaches that death is an inescapable fact of life, one that must be dealt with and not simply denied.

I'm sure someone somewhere has even come up with a viable way to use the fictional magick of the series as a context for real-life magickal work; and I'm sure that someone, somewhere has begun using the structured education of Hogwarts as a basis for training their own students.

Wicca and Paganism will never be mainstream paths. They SHOULD never be mainstream paths. For that way lies proslytization (sp?) and religious wars.

If you want people to take your religoun seriously, you need to focus on having YOURSELF taken seriously, not suppressing those elements of your fellow faithful who you deem "responsible" for the problem.

It starts with suppressing those who use Harry Potter and Star Wars as spiritual inspiration. What follows is Traditionalists decrying eclectic practitioners, because after all the eclectics mix-and-match willy-nilly and that's not how our ancestors worshipped.

Or the other way 'round: the eclectics suppress the traditionalists because the Trads are too hung up on recreating the past, they can't see that the future is in eclecticism, which has painstakingly excised what is false from the varied trads and kept what is true from them all.

So long as the Federal and State Governments and their representatives do not engage in official oppression, worrying about "what the neighbors will think" is pointless. If they respect you as a person, it doesn't matter what they think of your religion.

And what of those Governments? Increasingly, ALL religions have been in increasing jeapordy. Official DHS and FEMA publications have listed "Christians"" and "those who believe strongly in the Second Coming" as potential terrorists.
Those same publications also classify "environmental activists" "animal rights activists" "property rights activists" and "Defenders of the constitution" as potential terrorists.

This is not a time for Pagans to be divided against themselves. This is a time for Pagans to approach Christian clergy and say "Your rights are under attack too; how can we all work together to preserve all our rights to practise our respective religions free of government intrusion?"

I see stories like this and I roll my eyes and think to myself BLEAH BLEAH BLEAH BLEAH BLEAH BLEAH BLEAH.

So much todo about nothing.

I must say, I am tired of the whole Harry Potter is real life references. I am with the other poster...

HARRY POTTER = FICTION people.

If you believe otherwise, might I suggest a few professional shrinks you can go and seek help from.

Peace.

It is not Witchcraft. It is not magick. It is not spellcasting. It is not ANYTHING EXCEPT FOR A BOOK.

People might start taking Witches, Wiccans, Pagans, and other sorts more seriously if they stop confusing their beliefs and practices with fantasy novels.
