Venus Of Willendorf Still Hot At Ripe Old Age Of 25,000

Title: VENUS OF WILLENDORF STILL HOT AT RIPE OLD AGE OF 25,000
Plump and 25,000 years old, this lady remains a mystery even after 100 years in the limelight.
The Venus of Willendorf, a small ochre-coloured figurine from the Paleolithic period, takes her name from the village in northern Austria where she was excavated on August 7, 1908 by three Austrian paleontologists.
"This was the first statuette (from this period) that had such detailed features and it was also the first statuette to be discovered at the time on an archeological site," says Walpurga Antl-Weiser, head of the prehistory section at Vienna's Natural History Museum.
On the 100th anniversary of her excavation, this Venus is being honoured with a special exhibition at the museum, alongside other artefacts from the same period.

The Natural History Museum in Vienna is really cool to visit since it values scientific thought, and it embraces evolution unlike some of the museums here. Emperor Franz Josef might have been old fashioned, but he did use his brain.

My guess is, that she is actually a Mother figure, a Goddess of fecundity and fertility whose real name has been lost to us. Later, she could have represented the World, but, 25,000 years ago, she may have represented the hopes of her people to grow and prosper in the face of everyday struggles and uncertain times, and every pregnant female could have been living representations of this unusual lady.

...that has been accepted about the purpose of the Venus, is that she is a self representation of the crafter. Some academics have pointed out that the perspective of the carving (Large breasts/stomach, narrowing off to smaller legs and tiny feet) reflect the view if a female Sculptor was to work using her own body as the subject, if she was look down at herself. It would be a type of "self portrait" in stone, which would explain the lack of detail to the face. This is an interesting theory which seems to be as reasonable as any other.
