Title: Up to 800 species on the brink
Nearly 800 animal and plant species worldwide are at risk of imminent extinction, including 21 in Australia, new international research shows.
The research team says unless "immediate and direct action" is taken, 794 bird, mammal, reptiles, amphibians and conifer species risk being lost forever.
This represents three times as many species as are known to have been lost in these same taxa over the past 500 years.
The researchers, from the US, UK and Australia, including Dr Gary Luck from Charles Sturt University, publish their results in today's issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
