Brisbane Library Ban Hits Activist Groups

Author: Chris Griffith Source: NEWS.com.au (Australia)

Title: LIBRARY BAN HITS ACTIVIST GROUPS
Brisbane City Council is red-faced over a bureaucrat's decision to ban lobby groups and "political or spiritual" organisations from setting up displays in council-operated libraries.
The ban is detailed in new Brisbane City Council library display guidelines drawn up following a recent review by Library Services.
As a result, groups such as Animal Liberation have been banned from setting up displays or even leaving pamphlets in libraries throughout Brisbane about animal cruelty.
There is additional concern that the RSPCA, the Queensland Conservation Council, Amnesty International, the Hare Krishnas, and even Christian-based charities such as the Salvation Army would fall under the new rule.
It reads: "Library Services does not accept displays, posters or handouts which advocate the views of a lobby/sectional interest group or a specific political or spiritual point of view.

Actually its not Australian, just an attempt at managerial/policy speak. I think they mean groups that might be looking to push a point of view. Although why that would bother them as long as a disclaimer was in place and they gave equal time to everyone, I don't know.
Although it makes sense if you have worries about who can and who can't use the libraries as display space it would be easier to ban them all than try to set out guidelines. Maybe someone was just being lazy?

Living 100 miles West (& 100 years behind) Brisbane, I'm surpised to hear this happening in the state's capital. More so since the anti-witchcraft laws were removed several years ago.
Here in the boonies, I've heard Fundies _boast_ in the streat about stealing "unsuitable" religious material from the local library. Mind you I'll never hear critism about the Toowoomba Library or their dedicated workers. Their assistance & understanding is probably a 1/3 responsible for the growing pagan community here...
It's 4 steps forward & 3 back. Still heading forward thought...

| What's A Sectional Interest Group? | Aug 17th. at 6:18:09 pm EDT |

I can certainly understand the political/spiritual ban, in that if you let one in, then everyone wants a chance and before you know it, that's all that's on the library display boards.
But if the local anti-animal cruelty organization can't have an educational display, what's left?
Not being an Aussie, though, I don't understand the lingo. Can someone (Kate?) explain what a "lobby/sectional interest group" and why a library might want them out?

... about my favourite place to visit to and its so boring no-one has anything to say. Well I'd like to say something I read a while ago that went something like.... if a thought is a flower let a billion flowers bloom. They could always put a little disclaimer on every display absolving the Brisbane City Council of responsibility.
