Vandals Poison Brisbane Riverbank Trees

Author: Daniel Knowles Source: The Sunday Mail (AU)

Title: VANDALS POISON RIVERBANK TREES
Brisbane City Council is investigating the poisoning of dozens of native trees in an exclusive suburb.
Trees more than 100 years old as well as shrubs and mangroves have been killed along a 200m stretch of the Brisbane River at a riverside park in Graceville.
No charges have been laid but an internal council report has pointed the finger at property owners trying to improve their views.
"The evidence clearly points to the systematic and indiscriminate poisoning of an extended picturesque stretch of the river," said local councillor Jane Prentice.

I hate hearing about stuff like this and I just grimace every time I see it done here where I live. The county/city will go through and spray trees with a chemical which kills them almost instantly just for the sake of the view, or that fact that they are too close to an easement. Haven't they realized that trees and foilage recyle carbon dioxide and put off oxygen? Seems kind of moronic to start carving out the very things that sustain life for the sake of a view and property value.
This kind of goes hand in hand with my views of modern construction where they buy a parcel of land and then bring in a bulldozer to make it what they want so they can sell the lots and pad their pockets. I am thinking of moving further away from modern society and keeping my little chunk of mother earth just the way she intended it. Structures should coexist with nature, not force themselves in just because someone can.
Anyhow my 2 cents worth. Gee can you tell I follow a druidic path??

I could only dream of having a city government that would actually prosecute those who did this. It just goes to show how greedy some people are, and how short term there desires are. My small hometown is so intent on growing up, that many areas that were once heavily forested are now bare soil, and to make matters worse now that the economy is so unstable there are no new factories or stores opening up or building in the areas they have strip mined. Brisbane sounds like a beautiful place,

This is a terrible thing that has happened. Some evil, perverted people have been poisoning and killing our trees, and what's worse its suspected that its being done so that people might get better views of the river and raise the prices of their properties.
But, I'm glad I live in Brisbane where such an act not only is a crime, but where its treated as such. The City Council is doing its best to stop such acts and repair the damage and the general public is vocal in its support for the prosecution of these environmental vandals. I know there are some places in the world where the Council would be the ones destroying the trees on the behest of property developers.
Something similar happened recently not far from Brisbane. The Council there could not prove who'd done it, but the people who stood to gain from the better views were stymied by the erection of a large sign depicting trees and stating publicly what had happened. The sign will block their precious views and will stay until the newly planted trees grow tall enough to block the sign. Serves them right I say!

I suppose one could say "but hey, its Brisbane . . . they're all nuts there!" But then, I bet this happens everywhere. What's WRONG with people? Environmental Science should be required in highschool .. . . especially here where there are sooooo many environmental issues pertaining to native vegetation and the like.

shouldn't they be blaming pagans for this? Sorry, been a long day. Some people simply don't care about the damage they do... they have no idea the long term affects of their actions, nor do they care... to them it's 'just a tree'. What if these toxins leech into the water supply they wish to 'view'... what will the environmental impact be then? They should be charged and heavily fined to send a message that this action will not be tolerated in society. Their names should also be published in the paper as environmental offenders.

...will be heavy rains which fill the river without the trees' advantages (slowing of soil erosion, etc) . May the perpetrators soon be enjoying the view close up, as they wash downstream in their comfy homes.
