Archaic Laws In Queensland To Be Scrapped

Author: Nick Squires Source: The Sunday Herald (UK)

Title: ARCHAIC LAWS IN QUEENSLAND TO BE SCRAPPED
They are one of the stranger legacies of Australia’s colonisation by the British, but now, it appears, their days are numbered. Queensland has announced that it is to scrap a bizarre set of laws which date back to 12th Century England and which have been on the state’s statute books for more than 70 years.
The laws, which technically still apply, deem illegal such offences as “walking outside the home at night wearing felt or other slippers”, “pretending to tell fortunes at flea markets”, “being found in a stable or coachhouse”, and “possessing a dark lantern, electric torch or silent matches”.

It's illegal to drive a motorboat through downtown on Sundays here....
I suppose that was a necessary response to all those illegal rainmakers....

...until recently (in the last 10 years) it was legal for a man to kill his wife, IF he caught her in the act, but it was illeagal for him to kill the man she was cheating with. This little gem was taken off the books due to public outcry. My source belives that it was actually used as defense in a case about 20 years ago. The defense lost the case.

In Bakersfield California, you can recieve a $500.00 fine and up to a year in jail for detienation of a Nuclear Weapon. In Texas it is still legal for a man to kill his wife for adultry, for cattle rustlers to be beaten and then hung publicly, and murderers to be aqquited on the "he just needed killin' " defense. Yeehaww for Texas! Why do I live here again?
13th century flashlights? That goes to prove that the laws where at least updated in the last 60 years or so.

I doubt very much that this part :
"possessing a dark lantern, electric torch or silent matches"
came from a 12th century law or even a 1824 law ..."electric torches" were not invented yet!
As for "unauthorised rainmaking operations” , I'm not so sure they should remove that law. There really are ways to make the rain fall nowadays (within certain limits, you need enough humidity already present in the air) and those methods certainly shouldn't be used lightly (or by just any landowner who can afford them) considering that they might disrupt weather patterns and cause many problems to the people living downwind...

It was illegal to "pretend" to tell fortunes at the flea market? What if you were actually telling fortunes? Was that okay? And if you weren't at the flea market, was it okay then to just pretend?

These are essentially laws against Sneakers, Flashlights and other Burglary Tools, and objecting to some popular scams of the day. I don't think they're yet ready to remove laws against curing Cancer, Self Medicating or Smoking.
I wonder if they'll add one against cleansing another's windshield in Traffic.

I doubt that ANYONE would frown on an attempt at rainmaking in this country at the moment. If someone were able to demonstrate that they had done it successfully, they'd probably be awarded a medal.
