Casey Councillor: Local Witch Is "A Matter of Concern For All Casey Residents".

Author: Matt Cunningham Source: South East News (AU)

Title: CULT CLAIMS ‘TORMENT’
Junction Village naturopath and witchcraft practitioner Olivia Watts has spoken of the torment recent allegations of satanic cult activity in Casey have caused her and her family.
Casey councillor Rob Wilson raised concerns more than two months ago that a cult was trying to take over in the City of Casey.
Last Friday, Cr Wilson read a statement on 3SER Casey community radio saying the fact Ms Watts had declared she was a witch was "a matter of concern for all Casey residents".
Ms Watts, who runs a home-based naturopathy clinic and practices the pagan religion Wicca, said the controversy had affected her health, her business and her family.

A use of proper, respectful English, and a bit of attention to spelling and such would probably inhance the chances of being taken seriously. I'd also leave off the craft names. I know they mean something in the pagan community, but really, to the mainstream, they just sound looney for the most part. The reporter has been very good in the past. I have sent him a concern about the headline, although it is guarenteed that poeple will read it with a heading like that. I thought I might update you a bit on what has been happening. This issue has been going for almost 3 months and there are plenty of articles that have not been available online that are scanned and available on our site. Just reading the comments here. One of the biggest difference with religion in Australia is we do not have guaranteed freedom of religion like you do in the US (no one does not even the xtians) . No religion is recognised by the Australian Government under the constitution (this is a good thing as they can’t not recognise one either) . This is covered by Chapter 5 section 116 of the Australian Constitution. There are however in most states good religious discrimination laws that we can use and are using in Casey against the Councillors concerned. It has gone legal there are two cases that I know of, one of them ours. Casey has 200 000 residents so it is not some small town. When it first broke we couldn’t believe it was happening either. As soon as the court case starts the information that has been used for it can be released. Keep an eye out as if you are shocked now you will be horrified when it all comes out. When I responded to the "Witch Camp" story, you folks asked if the "christian bashing" was really necessary. If it wasn't against page policy to write remarks in response to other remarks, I would have posted another remark simply saying, "Yes." But now I cannot hold my tongue. Perhaps many of you out there haven't had the same experiences as I, with regards to conservative christians. I have already seen the types of occurances detailed in this web site long before they were publisized here. It was often as firsthand experience. Yes, the christian bashing is necessary. Sometimes it is our only way to vent our frustrations in a safe environment. Often, to speak out publicly only serves to reveal ourselves to our enemy. Yes, they are the enemy. I don't feel that way only because of my military background. Look at history. The conservative christians in this country are trying to do the same things to pagans, that Hitler did to the jews. Trying to alienate us to the public. Trying to silence our public appeals. Trying to shut down our businesses. Trying to remove our ability to obtain rightful recourse. And now, they have the seat of power in our government. And you guys are worried about me making fun of some christians? Wake up people. One day you'll all be as ticked off as I am, and there will be nothing you can do about it.

"If people want me to represent paedophiles or Satanists or drug dealers, I’m sorry, but I want to represent the best interests of the whole community, "
I wonder how he feels about Catholicism? What about the 'Christians' in our jails? Does he really think that where you sit on Sunday morning really says that much about how moral you are?

that the counsellor insists upon calling Pagans, Satanists, and then lumps us together with pedophiles and drug dealers. He makes a gross mistake in doing so, as we all know. My blessings and thoughts are with that family and all in support of her.

This is unfortunately a very common thing. Let's all equate something we don't understand with whatever we consider "evil" and jump on the "I'm so moral and good: bandwagon.

The mayor wasn't saying that Ms. Watts was necessarily a drug dealer or pedophile, he was just comparing the moral state of Wiccans to people who are. That doesn't make what he said any better, though. Unfortunately, he's using what has worked in the past to get people to join the side that has no real argument... "Save the children! These people are out to get our children!"

Does this mayor think he's living in the 1700's? What is this? Unfortunately, we see distraction tactics like this all to often in positions of limited power. Trying to gain support in the community majority by blaming a community minority. I just can't believe nobody tells this guy to stick to his mayoral duties... like raising money to fill potholes and such. But I am quite sure that the mayor's job discription does not include inciting unrest and unfounded fear in his town. For shame.

Oh man, these poor people in Casey have a fool for a mayor, don't they? What can you expect when the town leader thinks that drug dealing and pedophilia are religions? Did you catch his comment at the end of the article? I quote:
> Cr Oates said he explained his reasons for not >supporting all religions in Casey in a response to >Mr Bracks. >"If people want me to represent paedophiles or >Satanists or drug dealers, I’m sorry, but I want to >represent the best interests of the whole >community, " he said.

Pedophiles, drug dealers, satanists...
Maybe this is how america works: painting fake monsters everywhere and throwing people who represent counterculture into an enemies bin by labeling them something ridiculous. I know witches and I know drug dealers, and sometimes they're both, and there's nothing wrong with either of them. But put the words "pedophile" and "satanist" next to them and you get the enemies of God. The war on counterculture and the war on drugs are two of the greatest enemies this country ever faced. Put someone who peacefully smokes marijuana or hashish in jail, then put witches in jail, then put porn viewers in jail, then put people with sexual fetishes in jail, then put people who like sex in jail, then put everyone in jail..........................

"Cult Claims Torment"
Why did they take a reasonably balanced article, then stick a biased headline like that on top of it???
