Title: DIGGING DEEP FOR GARDEN SURVEY
A university researcher has set out to explore the world of the suburban gardener -- an environment that fuels a multi-million dollar gardening industry.
The researcher, Tad Zagorski, has been doing letter-drops and knocking on doors in the Hobart area asking gardeners to contribute to a survey he hopes will give shape to an occupation that, as a major cultural and social aspect of people's lives, has in the past been largely neglected in the field of science.
Mr Zagorski, a PhD student at the University of Tasmania, hopes his endeavours will not only explain why gardens hold such a fascination, even passion, for millions of Australians, but how we can make them sustainable as the earth's resources are rapidly depleted.
"Sustainability in all facets of human endeavour, including gardens, is crucial to the future survival of life on the planet," he says.
