Abbott Shirt 'Doesn't Vilify Catholics'

Author: AAP Source: The Age (AU)

Title: ABBOTT SHIRT 'DOESN'T VILIFY CATHOLICS'
Wearing a T-shirt with the slogan "Mr Abbott, get your rosaries off my ovaries" does not amount to the religious vilification of Catholics, a Victorian tribunal has ruled.
The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) has struck out a case brought by pro-life campaigner Babette Francis, who had sought to have the T-shirts banned.
The T-shirts were produced by the YWCA during last year's public debate over who should control access to the RU486 abortion pill and refer to federal Health Minister Tony Abbott, a practicing Catholic.

Now that is funny. It seems the only one truly offended was the pro-lifer! We could use a few of those here.

The first thing that stood out to me is that it was the YMCA (Young Mens Christian Association) that made the shirts!! How can the church say that Christians are villifying Christians?!
Just silly.

Unless this article took one example out of context, the depiction of VCAT suggesting the wearer of the shirts in question is ridiculing himself suggests VCAT needs to be examined for biases of the very kind its charged with examining as a neutral party.
Perhaps someone from Oz could clarify, but this article suggests by omission that it's OK to ridicule a politician for his political acts, but not to villify anyone over religion. In an issue like this where imposing one form of Catholic rooted prejudices as if cause for wrongful discrimination as a government official occurs, how is it possible to criticise government abuse of power without also being critical of the conflated dogma and a church which has chosen to make itself a political advocate? Can the Vatican be viewed as a country with a political, diplomatic, and military government, and ridiculed for its actions in those roles, separate from its existence as a religious body?
I find it mildly amusing that a "Christian Association" has in effect been accused of villifying Christians. Feuds I've witnessed among sects of Muslims with doctrinal differences merely over paid radio broadcasts make sectarian disagreements among most other religions seem petty, and leave questions about just how VCAT can distinguish what's religious villification when two factions identifying as the same religion both claim the other misrepresents and villifies their own shared religion.
At least in the US we protect equal opportunity feuds. Mr. Abbott could be chastised both for abuse of official powers, and for being another bigot Cathylick (as Landover Baptist depicts them) , through harsh expression of opinions based on facts, and extreme ridicule so far removed from fact as to be incredulous humor, not mere hyperbole. In the US, if one wishes not to attach the public figure criteria for libel and slander, the only way to do so is to neither act as other than a private person, nor lose your virginity to your mother while drunk in an outhouse as Jerry Falwell was reported to have done.
