And So To Christmas

Author: Orlando Marville   Source: Nation News (Barbados)

Title: AND SO TO CHRISTMAS

It is the time of year again when we celebrate _what we believe was the birth of Jesus. Like most things, this too has been taken over and become a matter of cant.

No one knows when Jesus was born. The only hint is the star, which shepherds are supposed to have seen, which would suggest Aries or some other significant star in that part of the world. It would hardly have been a star that was visible in the cold and bitter time of the year.

So enter the European, who in Europeanizing Christianity has to bury some of his old pagan tradition. So, how better to do this than to bury these traditions in new Christian traditions. Well, Christmas was among the first such mergers, if you pardon the pun. It was focused on the Northern worship of the return of the sun.

Just A Kind Note. Dec 21st. at 4:11:26 pm EST

I would just like to make a comment that as a practicing Wiccan I do not find it appropriate to be speaking badly of another persons belief system. I know that many Christians have said terrible things about my beliefs but I choose to be the better person and respect them and thier decision. I just feel that it is also better Karma on my part. I believe in treating the Earth, Universe and all living things with love and compassion.

And Yet Another Clue Dec 21st. at 1:43:25 pm EST

The gospels state that the shepherds were keeping watch over their flocks in the fields at night. This would be hardly conceivable had Jesus been born in December, because shepherds wouldn't have their flocks in the cold fields at night during that time. The flocks are left in the fields only during the spring and summer months.

Another Clue Dec 21st. at 1:14:09 pm EST

We do have another clue besides the star. The reason Joseph was taking them to his hometown was because of the Roman census. The Roman census was held in June. Also, there had been a long standing tradition amongst early Christians, who were in actuality Jews, that Jesus was born on the 25th, although they didn't know of what month. Therefore, I would guess he was born on June 25th.
