Scientists Fear Oceans On The Cusp Of A Wave Of Marine Extinctions

Author: Juliet Eilperin, Washington Post   Source: MSNBC

Title: SCIENTISTS FEAR OCEANS ON THE CUSP OF A WAVE OF MARINE EXTINCTIONS

The bulldozers moved slowly at first. Picking up speed, they pressed forward into a patch of dense mangrove trees that buckled and splintered like twigs. As the machines moved on, the pieces drifted out to sea.

Sitting in a small motorboat a few hundred yards offshore on a mid-July afternoon, Samuel H. Gruber -- a University of Miami professor who has devoted more than two decades to studying the lemon sharks that breed here -- plunged into despondency. The mangroves being ripped up to build a new resort provide food and protection that the sharks can't get in the open ocean, and Gruber fears the worst.

"At the end of my career I get to document the destruction of the species I've been documenting for 20 years," he lamented as he watched the bulldozers do their work. "Wonderful."

Gruber's sentiments have become increasingly common in recent years among a growing number of marine biologists, who find themselves studying species in danger of disappearing.

This is why I sometimes hate to be a part of the human race. I have to be associated with these people who think it is better to rip, tear and destroy than it is to nuture, love and protect. VvvvV Grrrrrrrrrrr.....Snarl.....Hisssssssssssss

its this type of action that will destroy the Christian church... when they took the Devine out of nature.. it allows this sort of thing... anyone else notice that the Pagan resurgance came about exactly when it needed to... honestly i think its Goddess way of saying... ok enough kids.. we need to build not destroy nature.. seeing as its protecting you and all... honestly I see two things... one the destruction of the church.. or simply a rebirth of the church to the way it was before the Xtain people took the devine out of nature.. a little more respect and we might actually survive this...

If the scientists are right, food is soon going to get a whole lot more expensive, and there will be much more competition for dwindling resources due to ill conceived waste management and overdevelopment of land and water that was once used to raise food. But those who are counting the cash don't really care as long as they can afford it. What they don't seem to care is that environmental management is not a "new age" fad, adopted by liberal hippie types, soon to fade to be replaced by "business as usual."
Once it's gone-- it's gone, and what's left is a mess for the rest of us to contend with.

Mangroves Aug 22nd. at 5:28:51 pm EDT

WitchPoet (Claremont, Louisiana) - Email Me - Web

Info from floridaplants.com:

"Mangroves are one of Florida's true natives. They thrive in salty environments because they are able to obtain fresh water from saltwater. Some secrete excess salt through their leaves, others block absorption of salt at their roots.

Florida's estimated 469,000 acres of mangrove forests contribute to the overall health of the state's southern coastal zone. This ecosystem traps and cycles various organic materials, chemical elements, and important nutrients. Mangrove roots act not only as physical traps but provide attachment surfaces for various marine organisms. Many of these attached organisms filter water through their bodies and, in turn, trap and cycle nutrients.

The relationship between mangroves and their associated marine life cannot be overemphasized. Mangroves provide protected nursery areas for fishes, crustaceans, and shellfish. They also provide food for a multitude of marine species such as snook, snapper, tarpon, jack, sheepshead, red drum, oyster, and shrimp. Florida's important recreational and commercial fisheries will drastically decline without healthy mangrove forests.

Many animals find shelter either in the roots or branches of mangroves. Mangrove branches are rookeries, or nesting areas, for beautiful coastal birds such as brown pelicans and roseate spoonbills."

Mangrove Protection Aug 22nd. at 1:40:15 pm EDT

Ahr-Ohn (Bridgeport, Connecticut) - Email Me

I thought Florida was protecting its Mangrove Swamps, in order to offer nice beaches. If you want an Ocean Side Development, use the Waterborn Option, as convenient for the Repo Man. Florida Development will only last as long as there is Transportation, and the Price of Jet Fuel is only going up.

Really, we can have nice beaches anywhere on the East Coast, if we only build Domes over them.

Where are all these Floridians going to go, when there isn't Jet Fuel for Cabbage?
