Got Mead?

Author: Shawn Logan   Source: Calgary Sun

Title: GOT MEAD?

Alberta beekeepers are hoping the province's move to allow a cottage wine industry to develop for an ancient beverage will create a buzz among liquor connoisseurs.

Last month, the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission added mead, or honey wine, to its list of products that can be produced, packaged and sold directly to liquor stores and restaurants from bee farms.

Alberta's honey industry is the busiest in Canada with some 700 beekeepers and 250,000 bee colonies.

I love mead, I just love it. I'd LOVE to try blueberry mead, and the raspberry sounds delicous, too. I've always wanted to try making my own. *grin*

Lots Of Mead-Makin' In The Goll Ol' USA Jul 4th. at 1:29:36 pm EDT

With a nod to our Canadian brothers and sisters, there is lots of mead being made right here in the good ol' Us of A every day. According to the Web site www.gotmead.com (excellent resource) , there are 47 commercial meaderies in the US. And there are a lot of people making it at home. Many of these folks, like myself, also make their own beer. I made my first batch of mead last November and will bottle it for Samhain this year. And I am about to make a blueberry mead (technically called a melomel) . If you are really interested, get in touch with your local homebrew club (beer geeks all) - odds are someone in the group makes mead also. And National Mead Day (according to the American Homebrewers Association - a great group with a great magazine) is August 5. Slainte!

Mead Mead Everywhere Jul 4th. at 12:00:58 pm EDT

Mead mead everywhere, that would be wonderful if it is allowed. Mead is one of my favorite drinks.

Here, in America, I know of several places one can purchase mead. But, it is so much better when it is homemade and it is not that difficult to make.

Check online and you can find many places which sell the equipment needed. As any Scadian will know--it is highly available at all SCA events.

reading the Witches Voice. I never knew what mead was but I sure hope our Canadian friends will share some with their American friends. Just ship a barrel down with the oil:)
