Canadian Buddhists Sell Temple For Tsunami Relief

Author: Big News Network.com Source: Big News Network.com

Title: CANADIAN BUDDHISTS SELL TEMPLE FOR TSUNAMI
A Buddhist congregation in British Columbia will sell its temple to raise $1 million for the tsunami relief effort, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
The abbot of the Vietnamese group, Thich Ngyuen Thao, said the temple has been on the market for the past year, and the highest bid has been $500,000 for the building on two acres.
He wants the sale to be completed by Jan. 11, the last day the Canadian federal government will match donations to the Red Cross and other groups.

| Arthur C Clarke Recommendation | Jan 6th. at 8:40:33 am EST |

by Carol (Columbus, OH) - wc_xemail

For those of us who don't have temples to sell, I found some good info on www.clarkefoundation.org Arthur C. Clarke's official website.
He recommends Care and Oxfam as two excellent organizations. There is a third he mentions on his website, an *indigenous* organization in Sri Lanka that has a 45 year track record of development and helping the poorest of the poor without an evangelical "price tag" (my concern with some of the organizations aiding the stricken areas) . See the Clarke Foundation website for more info and links to this organization.
There are many of us in the community who are also science fiction fans and fans of Sir Arthur. It would be a nice thing to honor him by following his recommendations. I intend to do so myself. Keep in mind he lives in Sri Lanka and was personally affected by the tsunami. Thank the Gods there was no loss of life among family, friends, and associates, but there was property loss of boats, diving gear, scientific gear, etc. at some Clarke coastal property. Some of his stafff were in the thick of it, but came through OK.
Wren, you might wish to post this info in the Announcements area - thanks!

Now how much would one of those Cathederals in Manhatten go for? or 1/1, 000, 000 of the Vatican treasures could provide a lot of fresh water and maybe a big healing.

Things like this help remind me that not everyone is concerned most about their personal fortunes. This is a wonderful act, so I am sure they will be throughly rewarded whenever the next year's Karma Reports are due.

After hearing this bit of news I guess you could say that my day got a little better.
I think it's absolutely wondeful for these people of (obviously) strong faith to care so much for others as to sacrifice something that may just mean everything to them.
If only more people were as kind.

they were going to sell it to improve a residence they own in Vancouver into a temple. But because of the disaster, they decided to donate the entire thing to the Canadian Red Cross. Find More info -- HERE

It says the temple has been up for sale for a year. Have they always been going to donate the proceeds to charity, or is this a new development?

amazing at how people are 'coming together' to help the victims of the Tsunami disaster. The selling of a Temple was the furthest thing from my mind, but, no matter how little or big the contribution is, every little bit helps.

any church, regardless of their denomination, doing something like this? I certainly can't. It seems like the majority of them shouldn't be considered non-profit and yet here we have a religious building being sold and the funds donated in such a wonderful way.

I WOULD say that these people are true Christians, but ....
WWJD? Sell his house to help others. WWChristiansD? Blame Bill Clinton.
