Wiccans To Hold 'Open Circle' At Kelowna Church

Author: Kelowna Daily Courier Source: Kelowna Daily Courier (Canada)

Title: WICCANS TO HOLD 'OPEN CIRCLE' AT KELOWNA CHURCH
Witches are coming to Kelowna, although they'd rather be called wiccans (sic) and they want people to know they don't practice black magic.
The Congregationalist Wiccan Association of B.C. is holding an "open circle" Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Church in Kelowna, 1310 Bertram St
Vernon's Brenda Casey, one of four paid-up wiccans in the Valley, said the association is an "earth-based" religion
"We aren't the casters of fireballs or the sacrificers of small children," said Casey. "We don't do anything like that." The B.C. wiccan group is a branch of the Congregationalist Witchcraft Association, says Casey

Ha! My uncle used to be a youth pastor in Kelowna. He completely disagrees with my beliefs. He's in Japan right now but if he was still living near Kelowna he'd prolly be one of those guys protesting the circle. Too bad I live in Coquitlam, it sounds like your circle will be fun! Good luck and blessed be.

Thank you to all of you who wished us well.
Our community is a small, Canadian Bible belt community, and until recently, there was no visible Pagan community within it. Over the past couple of years, I have found the local media to be increasingly interested in our existence. I have done two radio interviews with CKOV 63 AM over the past few months (both of which were exceptionally supportive, ) and one newspaper article as part of a Halloween blurb (in the local Capital News - also quite supportive) .
Yes, I think they were looking for a little sensationalism. On the other hand, in our community where people really don't know much of anything at all about us yet, if not capitalizing the "W" was the biggest error they made, I am satisfied. They will learn, because we're not going away.
The Congregationalist Wiccan Association is Canada's answer to the Covenant of the Goddess, and we are a very new thing, not only in our area, but in Canada altogether. It is very difficult according to Canadian laws (which are all provincially based) to achieve non-profit status and ordination for Pagan clergy. I believe we are one of three Pagan organizations to ever accomplish this in the history of Canada. We still haven't quite achieved "religious charity" status either. But things like this article advance that goal a little more, and I'm pleased to see it.
You would be happy to know that I wrote a letter to the editor to clear up a few things (I'm the one they actually should have talked to; Brenda did not realize she was being interviewed, just asked for more information about our community event calendar posting) , and they are going to print it forthwith, they assured me almost immediately. In a way, I'm kind of hoping I stir people into a lively debate.
Thank you again for the support! Saturday is sure to be a good day.
Blessed be, Sable (Diane Morrison) Lay Clergy CWA-BC North Okanagan

even when they are evenhanded in their reporting when people that know better do not capatilize Wicca they are saying that they do not hold us in the same regard as more mainstream religions. When you notice things like this take the time to wright to their editor so they know they cant get away with it.
