When Naomi Singer launched the Winter Solstice Lantern Festival at the False Creek Community Centre in 1994, she didn't know whether a grassroots celebration could survive outside the hippie-cum-yuppie shelter of East Vancouver, where annual events like Illuminaries and Parade of the Lost Souls have thrived.
That December night, she and fellow organizers searched the dark seawall for signs of the procession she had designed: a two-pronged parade to convene on Granville Island. Then, a light in the dark. And another. And 800 more, all merging "like a loose constellation," Singer says. A tradition, now run by the Secret Lantern Society, was born
