B.C. Town Plans To Erect Its Own Stonehenge

Author: Randy Shore   Source: Vancouver Sun

Title: B.C. TOWN PLANS TO ERECT ITS OWN STONEHENGE

A small community in the B.C. Interior is planning to create a concrete replica of England's Stonehenge.

Barriere's version would be a scaled-down model of the real 100-metre-wide Druidic temple that has stood on the Salisbury Plain for about 4,500 years.

But like the original monument, Barriere's version is expected to align with the sun and the planets for summer and winter solstice.

Stamer did not rule out the possibility that the replica site could become a ritual site for B.C.'s community of Druids, pagans and Wiccans.

Hopefully when they say "replica" they don't mean to replicate Stonehenge in its present condition. I don't see any reason to build something in knocked-over, some-stones-missing shape. I think it'd be great to see a big stone ring as it might originally have been.

That would be really good if the local Pagans, Druids, and other various faiths weren't barred from using the site. That would make it easier for a lot of folk, I'm sure, could be an educational experience for the community (sort of a "living museum" maybe when it's in use) , and is beautiful as well.

What would be really cool is for classes to get to see if things line up right, could make for a great field trip or ancient astronomy class.

There's a smallish part of me that cringes when I hear of another new, sized-down replica of the real deal. I start thinking of Spinal Tap, dancing around the miniature ring! Anyone else remember that?

In truth, I'd be hard pressed to drive out of my way for it. I know they must be afraid of massive concrete stones keeling over and crushing people in their oversized robes and fairy costumes, and god knows the BC soil is plenty wet and soggy. If it's hard to keep a fence up, imagine some of those big boys trying to stay plumb and square.

Now if they came out stronger, saying hey, it's not Stonehenge--it's even better! We're going big and bold and we're gonna blow your socks off with our modern materials and general awesomeness. And if you're lucky, you might catch some naked earth muffins prancing around.

Now I just might fill my tank for that kind of overkill. You have to sell these things, you know.

Yeah. So?

Apparently the reporter was worried that such might be the case and now his "worries" are confirmed by Stamer's refusal to rule it out.

Idiots.
