Obit: Greenpeace Co-Founder Bob Hunter

Author: CBC News   Source: CBC News

Title: GREENPEACE CO-FOUNDER BOB HUNTER DIES

Broadcaster, author and journalist Bob Hunter, who co-founded the environmental action group Greenpeace, has died. He was 63.

Hunter, who was the ecology news specialist for CHUM's Citytv, had been battling prostate cancer.

Hunter was also known in Toronto for his early morning Paper Cuts segment on the network where he would appear in his bathrobe and comment on the stories of the day in the newspapers.

Hunter, born in Manitoba, helped launch the pro-environmental group Greenpeace in 1971 after sailing to Amchitka to oppose nuclear weapons testing.

Wild Huntsman (Toronto, Ontario) - Email Me

Bob Hunter was a man who know what he stood for and wasn't afraid to fight for a better world. If you are aware of the environmental problems of the world, thank this man. If you know about clearcuts, about the dangers of air pollution, about the destruction of dolphins, about the myriad damage being done, if you know about the state of the world, then thank this man for his lifelong dedication to a cause he believed in and a dedication to speaking the truth, especially if it hurt.
As a co-founder of Greenpeace, the first truly notorious environmental organisation, he did something few will ever do, make an impact on the world. True, Greenpeace was more notorious for it's ridiculous antics like hanging off smokestacks and making noisy demonstrations, but their real work was to give people who care about the environment a place to gather and inspired hundreds of other local groups. He was a handful who showed it could be done.
He showed it should be done.
