Concealed Shoes: Picton Bed And Breakfast Protected From The Devil

Author: Jy Chiperzak   Source: Stirling Community Press (Canada)

Title: CONCEALED SHOES: PICTON BED AND BREAKFAST PROTECTED FROM THE DEVIL

A curious trove was discovered behind the lath and plaster of an old Picton, Ontario residence during renovations this spring. While preparing for the re-opening of their bed and breakfast at 23 Ferguson Street, Bee & Bee owners Jane Churchill and Tony Reed uncovered a cache of well worn, dried and cracked 19th century shoes.

The Victorian era shoes, two pairs of women’s and two pairs of children’s, have lain concealed since the house was built in 1857 by mason and original owner Robert Welsh and his wife, Grace. The Prince Edward County house, featured in the book The Settler’s Dream, is a well-known example of rowlock-bond brick construction.

The tradition of concealing shoes and other artifacts such as clothes, witch bottles and dried cats dates from the middle ages. The practice was believed to protect the house from witches, evil spirits and the devil.

Witchbottles...and Protection From Witches? Jul 13th. at 12:54:42 am EDT

by Silverwing (Texas) - wc_xemail

Someone needs to read their cards again.

Witch bottles were (and still are) fabricated BY Witches, hence the name. They contain a variety of things to thwart negativity ("evil spirits") , from rusty nails to herbs to reflective beads and broken mirror shards...but they weren't constructed to turn back Witches - that's rather preposterous, given that people went TO Witches to have them made!
