And You Thought Our Candidates Were Loony?

Author: William Thomas   Source: The Tillsonburg News (ON)

Title: AND YOU THOUGHT OUR CANDIDATES WERE LOONY?

Let this election be a lesson to us all - never vote while you’re still angry. (Also, never watch TV infomercials after you’ve been drinking. For sale: one brand-new electric wok with instructions and recipes all in Chinese.)

So you think Stephen Harper is one scary dude and you’re not even gay or anti-gun. Well wait just a Minnesota minute. Meet Jonathon Sharkey who is currently running for governor in that state which is really Manitoba with casinos and an awful lot of guys named Sven.

His website begins: “Honesty is very seldom heard nowadays, especially from a politician. So I am going to break from political tradition. My name is Jonathon ‘The Impaler’ Sharkey, PhD., L.D.D.D. I am a Satanic Dark Priest, Sanguinarian Vampyre and a Hecate Witch. My Magikal Path name is: Lord Ares. I despise and hate the Christian God the Father. He is my enemy.”

I see that the candidate from MN has gone for the Lady Pixie MoonDrip school of magical name selection.

And In Ring Number Three... Jan 30th. at 3:46:58 pm EST

It used to be that the Circus was an event everyone waited for with anticipation. Now it has become global- in a sense, but we have long ago ceased to be either amused or amazed. Just shocked and/or embarrassed.
What we find disturbing is that this troubling behavior seems to be spreading, with no end in sight. This Impaler does not speak for me as a Pagan and considering his behavior I'm glad I don't have to waste a vote on him. Nor do I have to worry about a wasted vote on Bush either. But I know that there is a subtle difference between the two-- although it doesn't commend either one. The Impaler is a clown trying to pass himself off as a candidate. Bush is a candidate who keeps passing himself off as a clown. And Minnesota isn't the only state troubled by this seeming problem, just more loudly proclaimed.
I just wish a candidate could be found who isn't trying to vie for the center ring in a Barnum and Bailey Circus- regardless of what he proclaims himself. And as for this impaling bit. According to the State and Federal Constitution- impalement comes under the heading of cruel and unusual punishment- much like his candidacy- and would not be sanctioned under any law. And while he has the right to run- ( even as a fruit of the loon) I often wonder-- are whack jobs (religious and otherwise) and special monied interests all that there is to vote for? Is there no candidate left that actually considers the people- all of them- in any running? When I look to the past and see the dynamic leaders we once had- the ones that helped to make us great-- and I look to the pretenders we have now- my optimism isn't what it once was. I'm only happy that for once- he's some other state's problem. We've already had our share here.
To me Canada has always seemed to be a sensible country despite its internal problems. Let's hope that it remains so-- either with -- or without Bush lite.

William Thomas is a humour writer who lives in the Niagara Region in Ontario. Yes he "lied" in the article, he was poking fun at Sharkey through the whole thing. I've read hundreds of William's columns in my local newspaper for years, he's hilarious! He pokes fun at silly, and absurd things and people. Especially our own governent!! No one was meant to take this article seriously. And yes it has been rehashed, but here in Ontario we have just started reading about this guy. So please cut William some slack.

None of the information in that article is new, in fact, the author seems to have gleaned all of it off of previous news stories and Jonathon's website. From what i can tell, this is just a parody off of the whole issue and whether it expresses the views of one or many are irrelevant. The man is at least honest, whether we like it or not. I refuse to side with or against the issue, but i am very against the news story posted. The author tells a direct lie within the article and then goes to say he did indeed lie. All I have to say on the candidate in question is that at least he is honest and willing to 'sacrifice' his standings in the public to bring his views to light. Even if everyone in the world turns against him, I doubt it will change his positions and I admire that in anyone. Stand for your beliefs, for if you sit back and just criticize those who stand, you are nothing.

Every time this nut-job claims to represent pagans, he undoes a little more of whatever small grain of respectability paganism has gotten in the United States over the last few decades.

Every time he gets any attention, there should be a flood of pagans (and Satanists and vampires, for that matter) , proclaiming loudly "this guy isn't one of us, doesn't represent us, and shouldn't be confused with us."

Because, like it or not, he's becoming the public face of paganism.

You have to look on the flip side of this: How many fundamentalist Christians would STILL start lynch mobs if any Wiccan in the Deep South comes out of the broom closet? Don't lie now.
