Vandalism Invades Waterloo Campus Yet Again

Author: Emma Tarswell Source: Imprint Online (Ontario)

Title: VANDALISM INVADES CAMPUS YET AGAIN
Earlier this week, most likely late Sunday night or early Monday morning, there was another act of vandalism on campus - this time in the ES2 building.
The act was targeted at Richard "Teddy" Dong, a student and teacher's assistant of the environmental resource studies program.
From his office door a display of feathers and other natural objects showing off different aspects of what the environmental studies program has to offer was torn down. The words, "No more stupid feathers, you demonic witchcraft punk," were written on the door in black ink where his display once was. This is not the first time that Dong has been targeted. The first act of vandalism happened during the summer term when objects were also torn down.
This also is not the first act of vandalism in the environmental studies buildings. Within the past few weeks, several acts of vandalism have occurred. A poster advertising the world religion conference was defaced, with the names of all the religions being crossed out except Christianity and a religious slur was written across the poster.

bigcat (peoria, Illinois) - Email Me

That sounds like a Fundie or two with one foot in the cracker academy. A few are noted to take offense to just about anything they themselves do not promote. And some of the more extreme ones think nothing at all of altering, destroying or defacing property in order to prove a religious point, that theirs is the only one worth knowing. This, unfortunately, is not new. Just very depressing.

Devi Spring (Toronto, Ontario) - Email Me - Web

I know that the Waterloo area has a large population of Mennonites (buggies and all) ...but they are not known for fundamentalist violence of this nature at all. And I would guess that most of the students at Waterloo are from other places and are not a majority of locals.
It's odd that an environmentalist would be personally targeted by Christian bigots. You think they would go for the more obvious Pagan society (if there is one) , or other non-Christian faith groups.
It's nice to see that the victim is not letting the acts quash his spirit. It is a blessing that we have students such as him working to heal our Earth and aid in humans living more harmoniously upon Her.
I think the campus security and local police need to up the ante and threaten to treat this as a hate crime.
