Wicca Attracts Boys, Professional Women

Author: myTelus Source: myTelus (Canada)

Title: WICCA ATTRACTS BOYS, PROFESSIONAL WOMEN
More and more young boys are getting into wicca, says the owner of a local store that will host an introduction seminar to the neo-Pagan religion Saturday morning.
The seminar is part of a Samhain - the wiccan new year or Halloween - celebration. Wicca is a form of worshiping earth-based gods and elements of nature. Feminism, environmentalism and midwifery have ties to wicca.
Wiccans gather at full and half moons to celebrate spirituality and practice magick, which involves chanting and spells. Wiccans are Pagans - non-Christians - but not Satanists. Samhain is one of eight wiccan holidays and recognizes the last harvest, or summer's end.

For goddess sake, I love being able to come here and check out the latest from my pagan community but most complain here WAY TOO MUCH........Yes there were inaccuracies, but the article had the best intentions, they were not pagan bashing..calling us devil worshipers and the like............no they simply didn't get every single detail in there that you all wanted to see, WHINE WHINE....I mean really, do you care if everyone knows everything about YOUR chosen path? It's not like we're using these articles to try and convert others, let it go......It was a nicely done piece that had some errors, no one's perfect people, you all should know that by now. One thing I love about being a witch (I'm not wiccan) is there is no quota to fill for conversion :o)

| They Respond To Polite Correction | Oct 24th. at 2:08:38 pm EDT |

by Raven (NJ) - wc_xemail

I emailed them, politely pointing out that HP is not Wiccan and that witchcraft is a term used by many people in different cultures to mean different things. I pointed out that while all Wiccans are witches, not all witches are Wiccans. They responded within the hour with:
"Thanks for the heads up on the error. We'll make the change on our site, which included the story via a news feed we receive from the Maple Ridge paper. I'm sure they'd appreciate a note from you so they can make the correction on their site as well.
Their feedback e-mail is www.mapleridgenews.com@telus.net
mytelus.com"
So, hey, they're educable and friendly. I say check in with them, and see what happens.

| Midwives And Harry Potter | Oct 24th. at 6:46:05 am EDT |

by KarEEna (Perth, Australia) - wc_xemail

Uh, since when is midwifery tied in with Wicca? I happen to have had the pleasure of knowing a very devout Christian midwife and I am sure that there are many more out there. Puh-LEASE!
And the Harry Potter thing . . . . my gods, that was just wrong.
This writer and that shop keeper need to be beaten about the head a few times.

I'm gonna admit, the full moon does strange things to people... chanting, and all that.
I was at a football game at this last full moon, and I belched at an otherworldly volume when I turned and saw it. Now, with my friends, I can't talk about full moons or belching without that coming up. My 'boyfriend' wouldn't stop laughing at me. :' ( Woe is me.
That damned full moon... always brings out the gassiness in me I tell ya. I'm a teenage girl, things like that are NOT supposed to happen!!
:P
Oh well, life goes on. In the immortal words of Weird Al Yankovic:
My fart will go on.... and on, and on.

| Two Complaints… | Oct 23rd. at 9:43:39 pm EDT |

by Cassandra Avallon (New Orleans) - wc_xemail - Web

A pleasant article detailing what Wicca is and isn't. Good to see that.
My first complaint is that Wicca/Wiccan were not capitalised. As legitimate, government-recognised religions, I should think we're entitled to the same grammatical structures other faiths enjoy. My second complaint is that the article called Harry Potter a Wiccan. He's not; he's just a wizard. Main difference? At Hogwarts, the magic is point-and-shoot, whereas witchcraft as we practice it works a lot more like a camera with all sorts of lenses that need to be focused.
Cassie Avallon
P.S. Breathe, people. It's simplistic, but it's nice to us. If you hate it that much, write a letter to the editor.

by Rhymer (Ann Arbor, MI) - wc_xemail

Didn't you know? Harry Potter was found with a Wicca 101 book in his possession at Hogwarts...magickal pornography...scandal ensued...oh, nevermind
What this article does is attempt to write a fair and balanced article in a very poorly researched fashion.

Holy moly! You mean not all Wiccans are scrawny 13 to 16 year old girls with trendy midriff tops and huge dinner-plate pentacls amid half a ton of silver jewelry?!

...for bad or superficial reporting on any story. Wiccan, Christian, religious, non-religious, whatever. This story is drivel: shallow and poorly researched; and I suspect the flaw lies in the reporter and not on the fact that Wicca and the NeoPagan palatte of faiths are a new or marginalized religions.
We cannot tolerate this kind of reporting. It's no good to flame or bash the editor or the reporter (to their faces, at least) because that will make us look hysterical and inflammatory; but well-written, ***polite*** letters to the editor that speak of the depth and beauty of our NeoPagan faiths and what they have to offer the 21st century are certainly in order, I believe.

| Keeping In Perspective | Oct 23rd. at 3:52:46 pm EDT |

by Liza D. (NC) - wc_xemail

Let's see.... I was hoping that people could argue that Wicca is not a feminist religion on the whole...without female bashing. Being Dianic, I don't expect there to be a whole lot of understanding on that issue. So, let me be blunt: Don't come close to female bashing. Sociologically, we, women, can't really be oppressive and "male bash" because we aren't intrinsically in a position of power. That's the truth, whether the men like it or not. I'm ticked that the store's owner could even begin to talk about Wicca. Ask the Wiccan. (One would think that would be a no brainer, but ah well) . Maybe she's Pagan but doesn't put a specific on it. Maybe, like me, she got a digree in religious studies...oh wait...if that were the case we wouldn't be refering to Harry Potter.

Pagans (and I do include all of us who follow the non-abrahamic paths) will not receive the kind of treatment Christian or Jewish stories do for quite a long time. Deal with it. If a news organization is outright hostile toward us, then we can unleash the dogs of war on them. But if a rather innocuous paper has a quaint if rather inaccurate story about us, pull back on the slings and arrows. It will only prove to our detractors that we are petty and verbose and not worthy of serious consideration. Remember, that is supposed to be a secret. I'm sure many Muggles think Harry is Wiccan. They only know enough about the faith to get it wrong anyway and they probably could care less. Personally, I would think that Harry would be a wonderful addition to any coven, even though tying him to the religion was the last thing Ms. Rowling wanted. We can gently correct mistakes, give interviews to counter false assumptions but consider the editor who receives the spit and vinagar that comes from our community when errors get by them. They will never do another piece about us again or worse, go the opposite way and never give us a positive spin. The Media operates on a different plane of existence. They are quite fickle, they feed on their own and are like teats on a boar - valuable in other situations but quite worthless in this case.
By the way, I feel after many years as a practicing Pagan, I can rightfully assume the role of the Great and Powerful Oz and lord over the rest of humanity with a stern but loving hand, cast powerful spells and be the most infamous wizard since Merlyn. Oops, did I say that out loud?

| Harry Potter Is NOT Wiccan | Oct 23rd. at 1:54:03 pm EDT |

by Coyo (Maine) - wc_xemail

Okay, I'm a pagan, not Wiccan, so I can't speak for my Wiccan friends, but Harry Potter is not Wiccan. If anything, his magic resembles pre-Christian Hermetic magick, like the scientific magic, alchemy, that was used by Paraclesus. J.K. Rowling is often quoted in saying that she did not use any sort of religious system in the Potter books, on purpose. In fact the most occult things in the book is using Latin for spells. And when since did Latin become a danger to the Christian soul? The Catholic Church still (occasionally) use it in their liturgy.
And TV shows like "Charmed" are just harmless fun. I enjoy the show a lot and think that if anyone thinks that anything is evil on TV hasn't watched FOX Television recently.

this article is so funny. I can't stop laughing.
On the full moon we gather to chant and cast spells. The article does not explain the reason for why the full moon is important.
Secondly, i have never seen a full moon and started yelling "Let's go Rangers, Let's Go Rangers" over and over. I usually chant at sporting events.
Secondly, a store owner making opinion statements hardly deserves to be the lone voice on why Wicca attracts anyone.
I am a Wiccan, not a boy and i work...why does it attract me? I have never touched a Harry Potter Book, never watched Charmed or any of its ilk... last i checked i came to Wicca because my spirit rests easier knowing the gods i honor are understanding, accepting and let us use common sence.
