Title: LIFE, BEAUTY, STILLNESS FLOW IN MUSIC OF ANCIENT FLUTE
One of the most haunting, plaintively expressive voices in the instrumental family is the shakuhachi of Japan, an ancient flute with origins in Zen. From Friday through Sunday a festival is being devoted to it, the first such festival in Vancouver and, say the organizers, in Canada.
The shakuhachi is a vertically-played flute, usually made of bamboo, its sound produced by blowing across a diagonal cut in the top end. The four holes in the front and one in the back are tuned to the pentatonic scale, though the flute isn't limited to that mode, special fingerings (half-holing), adjustments of the mouthpiece and head movements making possible the chromatic scale, and more, of the West. Shakuhachi playing is very physical, the bobbings and weavings of the head and torso making possible the great expressive range of the instrument.
