Spirituality Transcends Culture

Author: Bill Glen Source: Western Catholic Reporter (Canada)

Title: SPIRITUALITY TRANSCENDS CULTURE
Christ set the example, says Sister Jose Hobday, of how we must recognize the special virtues within all of us and disregard cultural differences.
"The greatest influences in life don't always come from glitz and superstars. They come from the goodness of people."
Hobday is a Native American and a Franciscan sister and educator who was shaped by her father's teachings rooted in Native American spirituality.
"When we look at cultural awareness, we have to transcend the differences of viewpoint and see if we can find a way that is so inclusive so as not to exclude anyone."

Honestly, one of the key words in this is Franciscan.
I was raised Anglican in England, but had a major crisis of faith in college. I went through a phase of hating the church for its patriarchal and anti-feminist ideology. I went out looking for a new path, spent a year in what can only be described as a cult, got out of that, and eventually drifted into eclectic paganism. I'm now, at the age of thirty, finally settling down (For a while at least) in the local chapter of CUUPS, which suits me fine. It's nice to be able to pray and do ritual with others without being preached at.
At about the same time, my beloved mother also had a crisis of faith...which led her into the arms of the Catholic church (My father is still Anglican) .
Both of my parents have accepted my path, my father fully, my mother with reservations she admits to, but neither of them have ever judged me, have ever told me I'm going to hell, have ever changed the way they treat me.
Both of my parents are long standing members of the Third Order of St. Francis of Assissi. I put much of the incredible tolerance of these two wonderful people, not just of my religion, but of people of different skin color, different sexuality...down to their devotion to the teachings of a saint we can /all/, even non-Christians, listen to and respect.

| Cool Article And Cool Lady | Dec 5th. at 5:23:38 am EST |

by Heather (Scranton, Pa) - wc_xemail

Wow! I liked this lady. She sounds like one of the nuns that taught me at my grade school. I'm going to have to pick up a book of hers. I wonder if the Guild has them...
Cheers, Heather

This woman seems so understanding about so many things. I may have to read one of her books. It was a little saddening to read of her mother's forced baptism, but at least it didn't destroy her spirituality. And she finally made the choice willingly to become Catholic. All these people chose their own path, and as long as they are/were happy with their choices, I'm happy for them. :)

| How Refreshing..... | Dec 4th. at 11:47:22 am EST |

by Little Miss Ro (Colorado) - wc_xemail

I think this article is so refreshing. It highlights that there are Christians out there - even people who live their entire life in their Church, such as this nun - who are really good people. I think it's wonderful that this woman is spreading the word that even if people are different, they should still be treated with respect. It's like my answer to fundies with the WWJD? trend. I always imagined that he wouldn't behave like the fundies do. But this compassionate nun is a shining example of what most of the Christians out there really are like. If there were only more of them out there who would speak up..... And let's all remember what she said at the end of the article: "She [my mother] took me to a medicine man to deal with the anger and bitterness in my heart. He taught me they will always win if you let them get to your heart. You have to stay pure in your heart. " Let's not let the fundies get into our hearts. Those are my thoughts.... In love and light, Little Miss Ro
