A Woman Walks Alone In The Woods

Author: Paul Gessell Source: The Ottawa Citizen

Title: A WOMAN WALKS ALONE IN THE WOODS
It is easy to think of author Merilyn Simonds as a witch, and not just because she has a tendency to look like a slightly wild-eyed and wind-tossed Earth Mother.
One of Simonds' ancestors, Janett Cornfoot, was stoned to death in Scotland in 1705 for being a witch.
Cornfoot's gruesome death is fictionalized at the beginning of Simonds's newly published novel, The Holding (McClelland and Stewart). The death sets just the right mood for the ensuing sad, bleak book about two women, one a contemporary Canadian, the other a 19th-century Scottish immigrant, who become bewitched by the wilderness surrounding the same hardscrabble farm in Ontario's Madawaska region.
Cornfoot's death sentence probably came from doing little more than Simonds does every day: wandering about the woods looking for unusual plants, whether for healing or eating or simply to admire. Women traipsing alone about the forest gathering exotic herbs tend to arouse suspicions, regardless of the time, place or culture.

Yeah... I'd like to read that book too... and the rest of the stuff she's written if I could find it.
Sounds like a great lady.
I'd like to find the nerve to say bye-bye to society as a whole and go grow my own life somewhere like that. But I'm not brave enough. I like my grocery store and hospital and convenience mart.
Woe for me. Another spoiled American. [rueful laugh]
Be blessed. --Ani

"She even knows how to make soap."
That just cracked me up. :-) I thought this was a pretty decent article.
