Ending Cup Curse Just A Spell Away

Author: Sarah Chapman Source: Calgary Herald

Title: ENDING CUP CURSE JUST A SPELL AWAY
Hex-breaking oils, spell kits, feng shui in the dressing room?
Skill may be the key to the game, but a little good luck couldn't hurt, as the Calgary Flames take on the Vancouver Canucks in Game 7 of their first-round NHL playoff series tonight (8:30 p.m., CBC-TV, The Fan radio).
Jen Silverhorse, a founder of the Diwan Kroaschent networking circle, a pagan organization, has a few ideas to break any possible curses.
"There are spells that can help," she says.

I read this article over breakfast this morning, and I wasn't particularly impressed. It came across to me as a big advertisement for certain people's services, rather than something actually spiritual.

And if your team NEEDS a spell to win, maybe you should consider backing a new team. Doesn't seem like it's fair play to bring magick into it.

So much wasted energy. If you cast a spell to make one team win, then you're acting negatively against the opposing team. So nothing really good can come of that. Aren't there more important things in the world to focus on than sports?
I've lived my whole life in Texas, and if you don't live, breathe, and think football constantly, then you're a freak. People get into college and get a free ride because they can get this stupid looking ball across a little white line known as an "end zone".
In the grand scheme of things, who gives a flying rat's ass about the outcome of a sporting event?

I've done it. Did a spell on the Cubs last year to try to break their curse. Lots of other people I know did the same spell. Didn't work obviously (either that, or it did work, and it was something other than the curse that caused them to lose the NLCS!) , but I don't see what's so wrong with it.

If the practioner wants to use their energy for their team so be it. It's there perogitive, sure, the energy can be used else where for a better cause, but thats your opinion.
Personally, i want Calgary to win. This way San Jose plays Colorado, Detroit plays Calgary. If Calgary Loses, they play Vancouver who currently has a seive for a goalie, and more or less be a free pass for San Jose, while Detroit and Colorado would be beating on each other.
and when it comes down to it, i'll be spell working for my team if they need it.

I too am an avid hockey fan and am hoping the Sharks can actually keep some momentum going this year. I don't believe in spell-casting in an attempt ot influence the outcome of any game. That said, one of the best things about going to a game and sitting with the crowd is the enormous amount of energy created by the crowd. It adds an element you just don't feel from TV. I enjoy basking in the crowd's energy and observing the other fans as well as the game.

You know, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the headline to this article. I mean, I love hockey, I love baseball, I will be watching the game tonight and jumping around frantically whenever the 'nucks score a goal.
HOWEVER, I will not be casting any spells what-so-ever. I will enjoy and get caught up in my hockey craze, but magick? I agree completely with Nx down there. To me, this type of stuff just cheapens the meaning of magick, in my eyes. Magick makes the world a better place, or the world around the caster. Magick helps ease pain, or heal, or whatever. A hockey game? A hockey game doesn't even come close to important in terms of magickal needs. And that's coming from an obsessed Canuck fan.
I'm sorry, I don't mean to offend anybody, that's just my rant of the day.

| Chicago Tried It....let's Just See | Apr 19th. at 1:06:59 pm EDT |

by tonayallicue xanthe (midwest) - wc_xemail

yeah, chicago recently blew up, yes, exploded, the infamous "bartman ball, " named after the fan, last name bartman, who caught a foul ball...that if he wouldn'ta caught it & woulda thrown it back or left it, that the cubbys coulda had a chance to get to the series.
i live in chicago, am anti-cubs, and was somewhat miffed at the magickcal effort to try & get rid of the curse, which i think is more internal than anything you can smudge away or blow up.
so many people were using magick to try & get to the series somehow last season that i think ...they messed it up. kinda like doing a bunch of tarot readings for yourself & u did so many that you actually messed yourself up, kinda like that.
those cubs fans are something else.

I, having grown up a pagan in a Baptist household, was forced to keep my spirituality to myself. But, since my family came from Kentucky, I still light a small blue candle at the start of the NCAA tournament for my Wildcats. And amazingly, my parents found my alter during the tournament one year, and though usually veimently against my practices, they just smiled when I tried to explain myself, and said nothing. The Divine is a force of interconnectedness (if such a word exists) for all of us, but It is amazing how many people can be brought together by sports. Not so much an allegory, as it is just an interesting experience.
Blessings and Light,

In writing this, I'm probably digging myself into a hole ready to be berated by the entire pagan community. But here goes:
Hockey is more than just a game for me. I'm a diehard Leafs fan, and I understand where these Calgary people are coming from -- to an extent. I don't agree with leaving the Dalai Lama's talk, nor with going for the sole purpose of getting some spiritual energy for the Flames. That I think, is just not selfish, but rude.
Myself on the other hand, and I know some of you wouldn't agree, I have a playoffs altar for my Leafs (in addition to my primary Wiccan altar) , and I light a candle at the beginning of each period of the game. Like I said, it's important to me, and a part of my identity.
True, the universe probably doesn't care which team wins the Cup, but on a smaller scale, there are alot of people in Toronto and in the GTA that do. Maybe a Cup win will make Toronto a better city.
Speaking from a "we're cursed" standpoint, there's alot of Leafs lore that lends itself to that theory. Take Harold Ballard, and Bill Barilko, for example. The stories are quite long, but they can be found in various places on the internet if you are so inclined to search.
You can argue that you should only use magick for the greater good of the world, but in truth, magick is a mindset that you can use to focus yourself on a goal. We must remember that for these men, hockey is their career. For the city of Toronto, it's a central part of life.
I am not saying that professional hockey and its championship are more important than disease, poverty, or war. Some people don't feel that they have any power to change such things. But if one city can be happy, maybe they can spread their happiness to other people, and maybe it can be for the greater good.

by Nx (Toronto, Canada) - wc_xemail

Okay. Now, I’m going to exercise my typing skills with a little rant about a personal pet-peeve of mine.
I consider spellcraft to be a very personal, very serious art. IE: A friend is in a life-and-death situation (literally) and asks for my help; I work a spell. _I_ am in a life-and-death situation, or at least one that has the potential to overwhelmingly affect my own life in a negative way; I work a spell. The world is falling out of balance around my head and darkness is bleeding into the gray area needed to maintain harmony; I … well, you get the point.
What I do _not_ work magic for are; lost car keys, getting an A on a test (I might light a yellow candle around exams, but nothing intense) , finding money (that would require someone else to have lost it) , having my house cleaned when I wake up, /petty/ vengeance, anything regarding my weight or height or eye-color (sic) or what-have-you, and, once again, I think you are getting the point.
It really irks me when I hear people, of any faith/walk, talk about praying/spellcrafting for little things that they can do themselves and/or don’t freekin’ matter in the long run. I mean, in this article Ashok Parashar says he went to the Dalai Lama's talk to “pick up spiritual energy” so his team will win. As if the universe CARES whose team will win a silver-plated idol when there are children (and more then a few adults!) dying with Cancer. Why not put some of that prayer energy, which I am led to think he _actually_ believes in, toward something worthwhile?
Now, I do _not_ picture the Divine as being an old man with a beard sitting up on a cloud reading “prayer-letters” all day, and with only so much time and energy to divide before he needs to take a break. I have evolved beyond that. I understand that the Divine is without limit or reservation or end, and so if someone feels the need to cast a spell to find their keys, or to help their team win a cup, or to help their child beat cancer… it's all good.
But… my ire rises when I consider peoples /priorities/ and the truly selfish, immature- dare I say- greedy nature of a humanity that puts winning silver cups ahead of, say, healing lives. Well, I suppose some people feel they can do _both_ (as I mentioned; the Divine is without limit) , but I _personally_ would not feel right about it. There is just something about addictive-greed that would leave a bad taste in my… soul.
But hey, do what you want; the only person I try to speak for is myself. Agree or disagree as you will and have a good day.
Be blessed,
~ Nx
