Lost limb strengthens girl's faith

Author: David Johnston   Source: The Gazette

Title: Lost limb strengthens girl's faith

At New Year's, we look back and take stock of our lives.

Our thoughts are shaped by events from our private lives - the death of a loved one, the birth of a child.

Ultimately, our own health becomes part of the mix. Good health is something we tend to take for granted. But it can all fall apart without warning, as 18-year-old Tonika Harnest of Chateauguay can attest.

"Hi!" Tonika says cheerfully as she greets a visitor at the side door of her family's semi-detached brick cottage, situated in a mature subdivision around the corner from St. Willibrord School.

Tonika is sitting in a wheelchair, her right leg amputated just above the knee.

I think this is a wonderful story, very inspiring. However, I'm baffled by the inclusion of her faith. There are only really two mentions of it, it is never accurately explained, and it is only in the last paragraph that she says anything about her religion helping get her through the experience. The article never says how it helps, and it feels like it was put in simply to add a bit of controversy to the story. I don't wish to discredit the importance of the article. I think it's a great story. I just don't really understand the point of including her faith if it's not going to be explained or included as a valid point of the article.

This girl's story is inspiring. As is her strength of character. I wish her the best of blessings.
I, however, don't agree with the way that Wicca was presented. It was MADE in the last hundred years, give or take a few. It did not exist in Ireland before Christianity... but I'll just blame that on the reporter's ignorance and leave it at that.
It was a great article, however.

I think we need a better treatment for Dysmenorhea. Painkillers only cover the symptoms, and an accurate diagnosis can do more, without the medication. If you simply reveal the actual reason for the Pain, Pain is no longer required to warn of distress, and the remaining sensations can be tolerated. If you dope down the symptoms, without even looking for the cause, you cover illnesses that could be something else.

Flesh Eating Parasites are rare, but it sounds like similar treatment would have been given to Appendicitis. I want that first doctor examined for Drug Abuse, as well as General Competance.

I'm glad the Nurses were able to out-vote the Doctors, when it came to the Prom. Really, you'd think Health had nothing to do with Life.
