Kay: Raelians, Witches And Christians -- In Quebec There Is No Difference

Author: Barbara Kay   Source: National Post (Canada)

Title: RAELIANS, WITCHES AND CHRISTIANS -- IN QUEBEC THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE

An often-quoted Jesuit maxim boasts, “Give me a child until he is seven and I will give you the man.”

Only seven? Amateurs! Since September all Quebec students from primary school entry to high school graduation, whether enrolled in public or non-funded private schools, must attend Quebec’s new Ethics and Religious Culture course (ERC). And teachers, regardless of their beliefs, must teach it.

Jonathan Gagné, a courageous teenager at the Joseph-Hermas-Leclerc secondary school in Granby, Que., has just been suspended, and will likely be expelled, for boycotting ERC. He is a hero to thousands of angry, mainly Catholic, Quebecers who consider compulsory submission to ERC a violation of their human rights.

The ERC curricula are mandated to introduce students to Quebec’s rich diversity of religious tenets and “facilitate the spiritual development of students so as to promote self-fulfilment.” Since when does the state “facilitate” spiritual self-fulfilment?

Teaching By Force Is A Waste Of Time.... Dec 19th. at 6:32:33 pm EST

Since when does the state facilitate self fulfillment? Actually, it doesn't. Neither does the church. Those who dissent have always had an uphill battle to find a place within a society that is led to believe that a State or a Church is the final authority on everything, even when the things that they do clearly show that they are not. There is one thing that is certain. People will only learn what they wish to-the rest goes by the wayside, and it is never a good intention to force teach anything that someone does not wish to learn. No good ever really came from it.

Sadduces Dec 19th. at 6:10:48 pm EST

Ahr-Ohn (Bridgeport, Connecticut) - Email Me

I see many comments here, from the Sadduces, who think that all religions are equally valid moral codes. That was a debate in Gospel, that the Sadduces taught the social value of The Law, while the Pharices taught that The Law was for Spiritual value. These Socialists are trying to take all the Myth and Magic out of Religion, and teach that it's all just Ethic and AEsthetic Cultural Study, with no spiritual significance at all.

Brand Loyalty has Spiritual Value, guys, and the ancient Pagan Gods, Jesus included, are beings that it's spiritually adviseable to understand.

What is the benefit, of Government Controlled Education? This doesn't even benefit the Government. I think it's from Quebec, which is Francophone Canada, and I suppose the motivating force behind, is the product of a French College. French Colleges produce Suicides and Socialists, and in a way, that there isn't much difference.

The Problem Dec 18th. at 5:04:49 am EST

R. Cicero (Seattle, Washington) - Email Me

In this case, seems to be the confusion between fair game and more obvious signs of bias and imbalanced equivocation. Much better to strictly offer an 'Ethics' course in which the ethical precepts of all philosophies, including a broad range of both organized religioins and its more unaffiliated and looser spiritual cousins is presented. That would be closer to an education, or at least an educational opportunity. But so many social forces resist being represented on a menu from which independent minds can freely choose. I'm afraid most of them think coercion and rank propaganda is the only worthwhile game. There's money and power at stake you see, so we are all ***ed as usual. What really chaps my ass is how Christians end up getting credit for the most low-brow philosophical reduction of all: the 'golden rule.' Please kill me now. The ancient Greeks spent thousands of years going blue in the face discussing and documenting every possible strain of ethical philosophy, further perfected by many prominent Romans such as Cicero and Seneca. Those were excellent minds, sorely absent from modern society. Whereas even the base reality of whether Jesus existed, much less his divinity, is still in question. When will all this madness end? Upon brain death. After all this noise, a toast must be made for the vast silence that awaits.

In Quebec... Dec 17th. at 10:05:09 pm EST

... this is probaly a good idea. i mean, having this class isnt that different than having moral ed. only this time you may actualy learn something. (you eighter had reg. (roman cathtolic) or m.e) and the only ones who have a problem are mostly the ones who want the main religion class out, so they dont realy have the right to complain, since their the ones who baisicaly asked for it.
And besides, its not like their telling which reg. is the best, their just telling you the basic facts of each known reg. (or at least the majoraty of them) . so might as well get rig of all the misunderstandings now, than letting them grow.

The only reason anyone would object to this sort of thing is fear. Fear that giving the children options will result in them exercising those options. Fear that their faith just can't compete in a marketplace of ideas. Fear that a thinking people can no longer be led around by the nose. Fear that they might have to tolerate, on an even footing, someone who isn't like them and doesn't pretend to be.

lol... well, ain't that just tough?

I wouldn't want any children being taught the buy-bull in school. In the US, unless every religion and Abrahamic cult is given equal time, this would be unconstitutional.

And I have a very good question: since it's Quebecer vs. Quebecer involved in this, who's going to surrender first?

Conflicted Dec 17th. at 2:30:16 pm EST

R. Cicero (Seattle, Washington) - Email Me

First, thanks for an excellent post, Fred. Well put. Subjecting students to this sort of curriculum begs a larger question: does anyone have the authority to teach anything anymore? Did they ever? I think Socrates would back me up on that. But in the modern world, it's simply disturbing to ponder the plight of students, so keenly subject to the social engineering protocols of the politicians, but also the tyranny and biases of their parents on the other. Not to mention the crushing pressures of their peer groups, society at large and the shifting nature of your peceptions of reality. Ultimately you have little choice but to make the best of a continually bad situation, since the only cure for existential dread is death. But that doesn't mean you have to sweat the afterlife, too. Sartre said it best: 'Hell is other people.'

Logic Vs. Relativism Dec 17th. at 2:10:29 pm EST

Fred Lawrence (Kansas City, Kansas) - Email Me

There's seems to be a major logical problem with the program described in this article. If two different religions make exclusive truth-claims, they can't both be true. A part of the beliefs of each is that the other is false. There is no possible way to reconcile the two religions. Ignoring the fact that many, though not all, religions make exclusive truth-claims is to a ignore a major aspect ot many religions. This is a problem for all "inter-faith" efforts.

It is one thing to know about and understand other religions, but they can't all be equally true. I myself have studied many different religions, and I think that this helps understand people, but it doesn't mean that I have abandoned logic. Having children learn about other religions is probably a good idea, but this doesn't mean that truth doesn't matter. The program described in this article seems to teach wishy-washy, illogical mush!

Without using the concepts of truth and falsehood, logic is impossible and I've long identified with Spock in his devotion to Logic!

Live Long and Prosper!

Guess the old axiom holds true: "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink."

If the bigots are going to go out of their way to refrain from acquiring certain types of knowledge, that's their loss.

Oh noes, all religious beliefs are being taught as equally valid?

No more favouritism for more established religions?

Witches are people too?

Honestly, the Audacity of some of these liberal commie-pinko's...

Seriously, the comments following the article make me ashamed of some of my fellow nationals...
