Haunted Trolley Car Turns 100

Author: Sandra Thomas Source: Vancouver Courier

Title: HAUNTED TROLLEY CAR TURNS 100
The famous old black and white photograph shows a shadowy male figure climbing onto the steps of an electric streetcar being moved into the Old Spaghetti Factory restaurant, under construction at the time.
The 1969 picture stumped everyone who saw it-not only was there no one on the steps when the photo was taken, but blurry details of the streetcar are visible through the ghostly apparition.
Trolley Car Number 53, which once belonged to the British Columbia Electric Railway Company, just celebrated its 100th birthday, and if you believe the stories, the car is frequented by the ghost of a train conductor who died in a wreck on the site years before the restaurant opened.

I don't know why, but every time I read something like this, tears come to my eyes. It is a rather peculiar reaction, there is no emotional reason. This is so interesting, though...

I'd love to visit this trolley--alas, my location prevents me. I'm a photographer AND a trolley buff, so I wouldn't be able to resist even without the ghost story. Just to add a bit of practicality and rain on everybody's parade: Shadowy, blurry pics of figures with details showing through their bodies isn't proof of a haunting! The effect is achieved by setting a long exposure (leaving the shutter open for a long time) and the figure moving. Unless the figure stays firmly in place the entire length of time the shutter is open, the result will be blurry and ghostly. Since this photo was taken at night, I suspect this could have been the case. The darker the lighting conditions, the longer exposure time you need for enough light to record an image. So you leave the shutter open for a long time. But regardless of common sense--what a story!
