Protests Across Muslim World Over Koran Report

Author: Sayed Salahuddin, Reuters   Source: ABC News

Title: PROTESTS ACROSS MUSLIM WORLD OVER KORAN REPORT

Angry protests raged across the Muslim world from Gaza to Indonesia on Friday over a report U.S. interrogators at Guantanamo Bay had desecrated the Koran, with calls for retaliation and a rising death toll.

Governments demanded investigations and thousands took to the streets in outrage over a Newsweek magazine report that interrogators at a U.S. military prison in Cuba had put the Muslim holy book on toilets, in at least one case flushing it down.

In Afghanistan, at least nine people were killed in protests over the report on Friday, bringing the country's death toll to 16 this week in its worst anti-American demonstrations since the fall of the Taliban.

The unrest spread to Pakistan, which called for a U.S. probe. Hundreds of people held a peaceful protest in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation.

Psy-Op Gone Wrong May 15th. at 11:27:25 am EDT

Rev. Ryan Adams (SWC) (Fort Polk, Texas) - Email Me

In Psy-ops things are often not what they apear. When you are going through SEER school one of the things they do is burn the US flag...but its not really the flag, its a close mock up. This may have been a mock up Koran that was "desecrated" for psychological effect during an interrogation. Just something to think about.

Something Smells Here.... May 15th. at 12:22:50 am EDT

I definantly would not put it past our government to do something like this.....
HOWEVER....
This just sounds too good to be true in the eyes of Fundy Muslims....
An act that is SURE to alienate/infuriate almost every Muslim in the world!!!

Are they really desecrating the Koran?
Or is it just more propaganda inflaming the masses?

I'll wait on the jury.......

People Who ... May 14th. at 12:21:31 pm EDT

are offended by the "desecration" of the American flag when it is burned in other countries to protest US policies, should understand this. And how about the objection of the Roman Catholic church to "The DaVinci Code"? Sometimes the urge to protect a religion becomes more of a belief system than the religion is.

I hate ALL religions equally :P

Ok, I don't really hate the religions so much as those who abuse them for their own selfish gain.
Why can't it be like in the good old days, when religions made people love one another... errrr.... never mind... scratch that.
I guess nothing has really changed, religion cannot change human nature... it can only corrupt it further, or enlighten it further. I guess it all depends on the person (s) true nature who is following said religion.

A Good Lie Always Stirs The Pot. May 13th. at 9:54:17 pm EDT

bigcat (peoria, Illinois) - Email Me

Considering that they would ban a tire because its tire resembles the writing from the Koran, I doubt very much that any Arab would desecrate their own holy book without an uprising by their own followers. And I would not like it much, not because I believe in it, but because it is a book and deserves its place as literature. Even though I know they would never grant anything I read with any like courtesy.
Perhaps it was done during a particularly nasty interrogation session. If so it was a very bad move. My guess is that no one actually did, but our reputation is bad enough a little lie would be enough to tip the scale even further. We wouldn't do it, but its more than enough with which to accuse us. After all, if it stirs unrest, why not lie about it? It would be impossible to disprove.

Irresponsible Journalism May 13th. at 8:22:11 pm EDT

Stone Bryson (Castle Rock, Colorado) - Email Me - Web

Let me say up-front that I do not, in any capacity, approve of the desecration of something sacred. A book, a holy building, a graveyard - it does not matter to me what it is, or what religion holds it sacred. The Koran, archiac as it may be, is by and large a decent book of faith (yes, I have read it) , but that is not the point here - desecration is evil.

But that is REALLY not the point either, is it? One thing being lost in all of this is the journalistic irresponsibility on the part of Newsweek. There is NO evidence whatsoever that this desecration occured. Newsweek took very sketchy, uncorroborated information and published it as fact. Now, reports are surfacing that it was actually the Muslims themselves who were tearing pages out of the Koran and stuffing them down the toilets, both to protest their incarceration and to be a pain-in-the-backside by clogging the toilets.

Now, because of of Newsweek's journalistic laziness, a lot of people could die. And we will hold President Bush, the U.S. military, the angry Muslims, the fundamentalist governments who encourage them, and the Jihad terrorists themselves responsible for the deaths that occur.

These parties may or may not be accountable for the deaths that may come - only time will tell - but the one direction the finger will not point is at Newsweek. Fact is, if their initial report is false (and it is looking like it is) the blood of the dead will be thickest on the hands of those behind this Newsweek report.

And - sadly - there will be few who will hold them accountable.

Enjoy your day - Stone

"There Is No Proof...", Yeah, Uh-huh, Sure... May 13th. at 7:43:46 pm EDT

Aidan Odinson (Collingdale, Pennsylvania) - Email Me

I did not expect to see a general admit to such an act of sacrelige. Then again, they are not denying it, either - are they? Just saying that it can't be proven.

A true Koran is so sacred that it is not bought or sold. Of course, it is also expected that the recipient might reciprocate with a suitable gift, but preferably not the same day.

A true Koran, BTW, is in Arabic and meets a few other standards. A translation into another language is not the same.

In 1974 at U-Tapao, Thailand, I found where someone had stored a Jewish tabernacle, complete with Torah inside, on top of a toilet in a latrine that had gotten converted into a storeroom. The response was "We didn't know what it was." Yeah, right.

Bear in mind that Mohammed did speak of respect for People Of The Book, which includes Christians and Jews. Those who follow the path of the Kabbalah might count in there too, for all I know. So, there should be no problems between Christians, Jews and Muslims. And how to bring that off is simple - respect.

Respect is not given. Respect is not taken. Respect is mutually exchanged. Respect will not happen if everyone waits for someone else to make the first move.

When will people learn?

Fundamental Christians, Fundamental Islamic May 13th. at 7:28:02 pm EDT

Lady FoxFire (Franklin, Pennsylvania) - Email Me

I don't know who to be ashamed of my fellow Americans (if this rumor is true) or my fellow Pagans?

If you read through the commets, you'll see people spouting hate or trying to call the wrath of their God onto to people who believe in the Koran.

My are we starting to sound like
Fundamental Christians who spout hate about Pagan, Gays or other who are different?

And how many of us have even look at the Islamic religion aside from what is printed in the press or shown on television? And do you really think they show what an average Islamic is like or do they interview the Extremist?

Many of you pointed your fingers have how women are treated in the Islamic religion but you're pointed your fingers at the Extremist not at true Islam.

If you're interest there is a page on the Status of Women in Islam.

Just becasue Islam is not right for us, it doesn't mean it isn't right for someone else.

Before we point our fingers and say that something is wrong or is the enemy, we better make sure we have all the fact

"The Holy Koran was defiled by the dirtiest of hands, by American hands, "

...how they really feel doesn't it.

While I can understand someone being offended by this I cannot understand how this act justifies killing. Although in a country where damaging this book is punishable by death I guess in their eyes it is acceptable behavior. Just goes to show the difference between our way of thinking and theirs.
Question is... what do you do about it?
Live and let live only works when one side does not hate the other... and as seen above;

recap: "The Holy Koran was defiled by the dirtiest of hands, by American hands, "

I just don't see that hatred vanishing any time soon.
My understanding is that according to their 'holy book' Americans (and all other Westerners) are infidels and should be put to death. Not a very promising relationship I'm afraid.
