Witch Hunt

Author: Raekha Prasad   Source: The Guardian (UK)

Title: WITCH HUNT

Until a few months ago, Sona lived in a one-room hut in an unremarkable slum hamlet of just 12 buildings with her mother, Ramani. Ramani had been bringing Sona up alone since her husband died from an unknown illness. Every day at 6am Ramani left home for her job as a labourer (painting the factories in an industrial area in the eastern Indian state of Jharkand), returning home 12 hours later.

One night in January, Ramani and Sona were fast asleep when two neighbours broke down their rickety front door and dragged Ramani out of bed. As Sona fled to a neighbour's hut, she saw one of the men's hands cover her mother's mouth and another close round her throat. Next morning, no one stopped Sona from seeing the pools of blood that had darkened on her doorstep. On the railway line 100m away, Ramani's mutilated body had been dumped on the tracks. Her severed limbs pointed in opposite directions.

Ramani's death was not reported by India's rolling news stations and fast-proliferating newspapers, because, sadly, there was nothing distinctively "new" about the way in which she had died. Specifically, her death was the result of being branded a witch.

Amniocintesis (sp???) for the purposes of being able to abort useless female fetuses, in order to make sure that they have only strong sons born into their families.

Every time I see another article about this particular aspect of India's culture, I wonder what they're going to do when they find that as a consequence there aren't any young women for these sons to marry. And then we see the reports from India about "bride stealing" kidnappings becoming more common. Even that will be a losing proposition, in the long run, until such barbaric beliefs and practices are abandoned by humanity.

The Rev. Sparrowhawk (Yakima, Washington) - Email Me

I recently spoke with a fellow who lives in Ghana, West Africa. He asked me to send him material about Wicca. He seemed very interested in Pagan beliefs and was considering following the Ways of the Old Religion while adapting them to his own African tribal heritage. Then, while preparing some material for him, I found a news article here at The Witches' Voice abouut how Witches were being hunted and killed in the villages of Ghana. This concerned me greatly as I considered the possibility that sending him information and course study work on Wicca mught cause him to be seriously harmed. I am still trying to decide whether or not I should send him the material or not. Perhaps if someone here at The Witches' Voice could lend me a few suggestions or comments I might better be able to make a sound decision in this matter.

As fpr the problems in India, perhaps we should offer letters of concern to their government so that the the issue may be resolved. For sometimes inaction may be doing more harm than taking action to correct a problem. Blessed Be!

Bright Blessings,

This doesn't just happen in India. I'm just grateful that Darla Wynne herself isn't victim to this type of atrocity that a culture that makes your stereotypical redneck seem like a technophile is capable of.

Women's worth has denegrated in so many world cultures. Our very own is indeed as guilty as any other of wanton violence against women.

Let's all take a moment to think of women who we know personally who might be at risk, and offer them our protection in whatever form you can give.

If you witness violence against a sister or brother human, DO SOMETHING TO STOP IT. Get personally involved.

Be Strong, and Make a difference.

Im Ashamed Of All Of You! Mar 21st. at 9:59:58 pm EDT

We should not paint the entire religion bad based on the acts of these few Hindus. They are our fellow pagans! Nor should we scorn Islam or Christianity based on the acts of a handful of radicals. I have professors who are Hindu, and they are probably the nicest math teachers in my school! Also, I have and have had friends who are Muslim in the past. I proclaim that I am a Witch proudly, and they are kind to me. I even have born again friends!! This is no way to treat our fellow men and women. Those individuals were wrong to kill the witches, but they will be punished by their goddess, Kali, in due time. Shame on us!! It is times like these that I am ashamed to be called a Pagan!

How is it that such a thing can still occur???

Ignorance abounds and history repeats itself--because most are lacking an understanding of the "Law of Return"...

Does anyone take note that the accuser of these Women is practicing the worst form of Left-path Magic???

Thieves and Liars--
All those who conspire--
Tally your Karma ever higher...
I call it back around (again) --
Negative actions return (x10) ...
You shall be haunted in your sleep--
By the dirty secrets that you keep...
As it was--is now--and ever shall be--
Only Justice for Women will set you free...

Mighty Themis--hearken unto me--
Protect my Sisters in Their hour of need--
For They have been most grieviously offened-
Shield Them (now) that this nightmare be
ended...

By Your all seeing Justice--
May They be freed--
As You do will--
SoMoteItBe...
