Indian Tribe Defends "Hill God" From Foreign Miner

Author: Simon Denyer   Source: Reuters

Title: INDIAN TRIBE DEFENDS "HILL GOD" FROM FOREIGN MINER

Their thick, ancient forests shelter leopards, elephants and even the odd tiger, their slopes are home to an isolated tribe, but the "curse" of eastern India's Niyamgiri hills lies beneath the soil.

Massive deposits of bauxite have brought Britain's Vedanta Resources to this remote corner of the state of Orissa, where they have already built a $900 million alumina refinery.

Just a stone's throw from its gleaming new facility, a few hundred people gathered in the shade of mango trees in Lanjigarh in mid-March for the latest protest against the company.

As eastern India engages in a headlong but increasingly controversial rush to industrialize and exploit its vast mineral resources, Vedanta's plans to turn the top of the Niyamgiri range into open-cast mines has emerged as a key battleground.

Sad Event Apr 2nd. at 1:52:40 pm EDT

Kalaratri (Montreal, Quebec) - Email Me

I come from an area in the northern quebec that all belongs to a big aluminum company. It is a really special and beautiful region always called "the Kingdom" by the first white people to come there. (Saguenay Lac St-Jean)
There is four aluminum factories and one who was for a long time the biggest one in the world, because we have a lot of hydroelectricity potential.
They possesses all the area, the lands, the rivers, the forests. Since 1925 they contribute to destroy the nature and the majority of the people who lives there do not even know about the real owner of the land. My family always worked for them or the wood industry. That makes me sad because all my life was paid with cash made from destruction of nature. I left this place when I was 16 because I was traumatized about these facts and could not bear to see my beloved forest to be destroyed anymore. Anytime I come back there I fear pollution and really cry a lot because nobody can do anything about that. I tried to explain to my mother that being an chemichal technician is not my ultimate goal in life and that money does not matter for me... But she really cannot understand the reality we are facing about the destruction of nature everywhere, including mankind, the only thing that hurted me deeply in my heart.

So the consequences are really sad and are more tragic than we think, and nobody can do anything about it, because when there is money, there is power, and people simply don't want to lose their job.

I really pray that this nightmare will come to an end, and I work hard to bring the new Aeon to concrete reality. Be blessed all friends.

Love the way this article portrays the Hill people as ignorant, filthy, undernourished and squalid. Not to mention greedy money grubbers as well.

Obviously they NEED this company to move "Civilisation" in, to improve their miserable, supersticious, dirty little lives. AND, the company gets to make a tidy profit doing it. Oh how noble. And the final quote in the article really stabs it in...sounds to me as if the speaker regrets the passing of time where the good old Goons and Jackboots can't be ustilised effectively anymore. Not that it's WRONG to use such tactics, mind now. It's merely that it "Doesn't Work in the Long Run".

Unfortunately, this is not a new situation. It's been done throughout history. Whenever something is found to have value-those living on those lands will be evicted and pushed aside in order to obtain it. And those shoved aside never see any real benefits and are left behind after the grabbing is done, all the poorer and with a ruined despoiled land besides. And yet these poor people are always condemned and derided and even attacked for standing in the way of "progress" if they protest against it.
