Waltzing With The Wicked Witch

Author: Ipsita Roy Chakraverti   Source: Financial Express

Title: WALTZING WITH THE WICKED WITCH

A waltz with me? I’m sure men would kill for that. But why the stampede? Would it be because I’m gorgeous and witty or could it be because I’m a life-line to personal power and magic? Difficult question. But nothing’s too difficult for India’s beloved witch. How do most people react to me — I mean apart from overawed men? They’re amazed at my guts, curious about my amazing youthfulness, (you know that line, about ‘her loveliness goes on and on’), and yes, I’ll be frank, most wives are a tad envious. In fact, sometimes terribly resentful. Specially since my autobiography Beloved Witch zoomed in and up and refused to come down from the top.

But fascinating though the subject is, let’s stop talking about me for a while. What is ‘Wicca’? It comes from the old English ‘Wicce’ meaning the craft of the wise. An ancient branch of wisdom, going back, some historians believe, nearly 25,000 years.

I think one or two response to this article were really arrogant themselves. A body's got to stop and think a minute before responding in any fashion lest you repeat the offense of the offender.

The reason I hit this so quickly was to point out that (again) that this woman puts herself at risk by even openly calling herself a witch, and if there are people who really want to practice any form of witchcraft in India, she's making it a little easier and a little safer. So, cut her a little slack. People seeking the truth will find it.

Now, I tell you folks screaming and yelling your heads off with your robes crammed...sorry... go back through some of these news reports in "the Nest" and look at the articles having to do with women being murdered in India because they were suspected of witchcraft. If she can stop just a few of these by *conjuring* her outrageous image to mind, then she's done some good.

You know, Mr. Gardner wasn't exactly a historical and anthropological mastermind. It wasn't until recently that we began to learn the true data behind the ancient traditions of Europe. Also, she comes from a very different culture who's information and dating system is vastly different from our own. (You can't just say I know India, because I've called Kali in circle. Sorry, it doesn't work that way) .

It irks me that we get so ethnocentric sometimes, and that we judge some one by the surface value not seeing that the movements they make are greater, kind of like an iceberge.

I bet she's called on Kali, because Kali is the destroyer of maya (illusion) and this woman seems to be trying to destroy the illusion that witches are evil. That's the work of the Goddess, and if it's a guise you don't like...

Sometimes being a "witch" is all women have to hang onto. Yes, she's arrogant, but she is trying to make it easier for others to be different in a country that is still pretty patriarchial, despite all the goddesses.
An independant woman with a mind of her own is anathema in some countries-- including our own, in some places.

How incredibly judgemental we all are. How dare we even prescribe to judge this woman by our own societal standards! She lives a world away in a very dangerous place for a woman, let alone a powerful woman who openly calls herself a Witch and is openly training others in her religion.

Yes I found her arrogant and full of herself...but did you ever think of the fact she may absolutely HAVE to be that way in order to survive?? If she were meek and demure, would she be able to accomplish what she has set out to do??

No, I do not believe so.

So hell, if a woman has to be arrogant and full of herself in order to get her believe system accepted so that women are not being butchered because of what they believe in, I'll support her. Even stroke that ego of hers, if it will help.

But judge her. Hells no.

More power to her I say!!

We should all have the confidence to be so arrogant, then maybe out teenage daughters wouldn't feel the need to starve themselves to achieve the Barbie look.

Peace.
Linda

Boy, oh, boy! She sure is into herself! I don't think I've ever met a Wiccan that is so arrogant!

I also found her lack of updated information pathetic. She says:

"It comes from the old English ‘Wicce’ meaning the craft of the wise."

Ummm... Nope! It doesn't mean 'Craft of the Wise'. Check the Oxford English Dictionary, lady. You'll find that the word 'Wicca' comes from the Indo-European root word, '*weik2' (not to be confused with '*weik4') . Its meaning is somewhere between 'religious' and 'magick'. So, it means 'religio-magick' (or, something like that) .

And, the 25,000 year mark makes me giggle. We all know that religio-magick goes back way further than that! Look up all of the latest information about the Sans in Northern Batzwana. A Norwegian scientist and her students discovered religious artifacts (ritual items) near the Tsodilo Hills in Northern Batzwana that date back to 70,000 BCE.

And, what about the Achillian fertility goddess that dates back to about 200,000 BCE. Now, that's ancient!

This pompous so-called fluffy bunny Wiccan needs to get her facts straight.

That's posted above this one, about witch hunting in another province of India. They hunt witches for real there, like they used to hunt tigers, to kill.

Hang On... Apr 1st. at 7:24:59 pm EDT

Before anyone says..."But that's not what it's about..." What she's doing is in India, a place where you can die for being considered a witch. So, in a way, she's casting a spell over the idea that traditionalists have of being a witch. By glamorizing the "witch" she's...um...saving lives, making it look harmless for the girls that get interested in Western occultism to country women practicing age old root medicine.

Her facts are sketchy, she's a tad arrogant, but she's actually being very helpful in her country, if she's able to pull it all off. Who knows, maybe she's a lot of fun.

I have to give her kudos for simply trying to make it easier to BE a witch in India. The woman has guts, and that is for sure. (A place with the Sacred Feminine is so powerful it'll throw you down, which is why I never understood the problem in the first place, but then... *throws up hands*)
