Govt Turns To Wiccan Queen To Save Girls

Author: Bappa Majumdar   Source: Reuters

Title: GOVT TURNS TO WICCAN QUEEN TO SAVE GIRLS

The government has enlisted the follower of a global pagan witchcraft movement to help curb the country's high female infanticide rate and end the neglect of the girl child, officials said on Monday.

Ipsita Roy Chakraverti, a Wiccan and social activist, has been nominated by the government's National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI) to head a panel tasked with improving the status of young girls, they said.

Around 10 million girls have been killed by their parents over the last 20 years, the government says, as female infanticide and foeticide, although illegal, are still prevalent with boys preferred to girls as breadwinners.

"This is a triumph for Wicca as the establishment was against Wiccans for years," Chakraverti said.

I believe in the other article about this lady, i may have said that, while her "wicca" needs a bit of upgrading, what she is doing, both for witchcraft and for women in India is commendable. If they need a bit of fluffy bunny witchcraft to get themselves moving, then I am all in favor of it, get ripping. India is either a modern country with women doctors, scientists, etc or a backward country dragging women off to be killed as witches and killing off female children - depends on how much money you have. They need a lot of help in the birth control and rights for women areas.

If it takes a witch queen to do some of that, I will help provide her with a crown.

They Despise Females Jul 4th. at 2:35:10 pm EDT

in India now, I found this out when my Mom took a world history class & came home & told us of those "kitchen accidents"; you can consider it brutal population control, too few females means less breeding for billion plus India, I heard they would feed the infant uncooked rice or bits of opium to kill their own child. Just think, here in America the Christians keep saying that using birth control means you value your children less, yet over there, where almost no contraceptives are used they kill their infants, or pimp them out-witness "Born into Brothels" [Web LINK] typically Christians have it upside down.

DOESN'T ANYONE.... Jul 4th. at 10:52:47 am EDT

Whitewolf (Schenectady, New York) - Email Me

GET the jist of this article? Or is everyone just goofing around?

Let's get serious, people.... there IS a major problem, especially in the third-world countries, of discrimination against women and girls, even to the point where they are deliberately murdered just on the basis of their gender. In a lot of the African nations, FGM is still practiced, reprehensible as it is. Girls are "married off" as WAY too young an age and they never get an education, or if they do, they never get to complete it. If this Lady, "Witch Queen" or not, can do something positive to IMPROVE the lives of her fellow Females, then I am all for it!! Ignoring the problem won't make it go away. Just as we women here in the US are LOSING more and more of our rights that our ancestoresses fought for. THANK THE SHRUB FOR THAT.... Remember, as one poster said, "what diminishes one gender winds up diminishing both"

Off my soapbox now.... sorry

Love too all

No, No Guys, I'm The Queen Jul 3rd. at 6:07:44 pm EDT

Shadowbear (Hillsboro, Oregon) - Email Me

I'm sure of it, I checked around and the only other queen I know is the drag queen where I last worked - he had a neat crown and everything. But I'm the queen of witches - or was that bitches? I'll have to ask my husband about that one - but I'm sure I saw some minions around here somewhere.

while I wish her the best Of luck in what she is trying to accomplish. However.. She really needs to study her Wicca a little more.. A witchqueen? Oh please..

While I really appreciate she needs to stand up to the male dominated society, but "witchqueen"?

Could she not tag herself with atitle that would be a little less, well, foolish?

Even mama Doreen wouldn't permit that title applied to her while she was alive.

Did some moistened bink lob a scimitar at her? Because I didn't vote for a Wiccan Queen!

Anyway, the statement "This is a triumph for Wicca as the establishment was against Wiccans for years" seems to sum up the current fundie attitude towards Pagan religions in general. Good article, and watch out for the violence inherent in the system!

GREAT ARTICLE! Jul 3rd. at 4:24:02 am EDT

Whitewolf (Schenectady, New York) - Email Me

I certainly hope they have success with their project. I agree with another poster - any religion that devalues females just for being female OR males just for being male devalues BOTH. We are two halves of a whole. Yin and Yang. I heard something some time ago that China's one-child-only policy has FINALLY turned around and bit it in the ass....they were SO hot for having sons that they were RUNNING OUT of marriagable girls! There were a lot of young men, but there were not enough young women to go around.... I kinda hadda laugh. I KNEW that was gonna happen. Now China is PAYING people extra money for having girls, but I digress....
Good luck to all in this project. I hope it's a smashing success!

Love to all

Common Sense So Uncommon Jul 3rd. at 2:22:53 am EDT

it would seem obvious that nature knows what's best in creating a balance between male and female that is ideal for survival. After all she's had hundreds of thousands of years of practice. But we humans can be so arrogant that we think our societies or religions have a better answer for how many boys or girls are ideal.

Someone else mentioned gender roles in the workplace and religion and it's true that this is the source of the problem. People are stupid enough to risk their survival for the sake of prefering a male child to provide income and give them a 'proper' burial ritual.

If this kind of thing continues to go unchecked in places like India and China, watch out. What do countries with an overly large number of young males without potential females for mates do? History shows they build huge armies of sexually frustrated and therefore very aggressive men and take females from neighboring countries that have them.

I hope this woman succeeds with her project. And I also suspect that she is perhaps not as goofy as many of these articles make her seem. The title of witch queen may not be her choice. I mean don't we all know from experience how the media likes to use the most sensational methods they can to make Wiccans and Pagans look foolish? It's only just started to improve for us and we've had a lot more Wiccans working on the media to improve our coverage.

Judging by her goals I think there is more substance to this woman than her local media portrays.

... that Ipsita Roy Chakraverti is using her faith and her position to do such noble work. It's also wonderful that the government is essentially sanctioning her faith.

Here's a lesson Dubya could take from India.

Gaining Some Ground? Jul 2nd. at 10:04:45 pm EDT

Medea (Somewhere, Massachusetts) - Email Me

I hope so. But it's the mysogyny that needs to be addressed, in India, and every other country in the world where females are ignorantly (and arrogantly) believed to be of lesser worth than males.

Most traditions of Wicca value females and males equally, although, to be honest, there are some that eliminate the male factor entirely. ( I do understand why, and accept that the choice is theirs, but I personally disagree with the idea.) However, any Wiccan tradition I have ever been involved in has taught, and ensured, that male and female are viewed as the two halves of one essential polarity.
Half is half, neither is less than the other. Mathematically or any other way. But I digress.

if Wicca can make inroads into combating mysogynistic, devaluing beliefs and attitudes, anywhere in the world, and encouraging positive change, that's great. Mother and Father actually do listen. They love their children equally, boys AND girls.

We have too many haters out there. I think humans should lose the fear, ignorance and overbearing ego BS thing, and do our best to reflect that which we consider to be the finest, most Godlike qualities that each and every one of us can truly possess. Humanity needs to grow up, and people have to stop treating each other like sh*t.

I would say that devaluing females because they're female, or males because they're male, would have the general effect of devaluing everyone, and creating lesser people in one way or another. I hope Wicca is able to make a difference in India. Or anywhere else. Something sure needs to, because this crappy male/female "I'm Better than You" hate thing has got to go.

Wiccan Devadasi? Jul 2nd. at 7:19:51 pm EDT

Ahr-Ohn (Bridgeport, Connecticut) - Email Me

"Chakraverti, who studied the faith in Canada, is planning to institutionalise Wicca in India. She has set up a "Wiccan Brigade" to stop the persecution and killing of young girls and women on the pretext of their being witches."

The Wiccan Brigade sounds like a state sponsored order of Devadasi, modern day Devadasi, fit for the 20th Century! Now, if only that subcontinent could realise what value the traditional Devadasi have, so that Girls have lives to grow up to.

It's not like Aradia is undeserving of Devadasi, but I'm wondering if I can bring her out from Colorado... King Solomon is presently beseiging London as a Devadasi Whore, and she hails from Kolkotta. Santa Claus might like to join the fun; she's living in Florida, but we used to have good times in Julundur... Hasn't Ganesh being hanging about Toronto?

Or, maybe we could allow India to find the reason that she's developed over 5,000 years ago. Perhaps, they can find sufficient wisdom, in this new order of Devadasi, that their Brahmans will no longer be able to keep their country a leaprous cripple, by their neglect of the Shudders & Dalits.
