Indian Villagers 'Killed Witch'

Author: Faisal Mohammad Ali Source: BBC News

Title: INDIAN VILLAGERS 'KILLED WITCH'
Police in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh say they have arrested 17 villagers over the killing of a woman suspected of being a witch.
The 40-year-old woman, Phool Kunwar, was dragged from her home on Monday night, beaten and burned with a hot iron, police say.
The accused include three women. If found guilty, they face up to five years in prison.
Social activists say such cases are common in India.

They're not out to get you. It's not about your religion.
Well, not specifically, anyway.
It's about settling some petty score. Or it's about scapegoating someone who strayed a little too far from toeing the sociocultural line. Punishing someone who spoke out a little too outspokenly, and making sure it won't happen again for a week or two, anyway.
It's about finding someone to blame when times are hard and everyone is afraid. It's about hysteria, something that's started in someone's head and mushrooms because it's quickly fed.
You don't have to have a witch to have a witch-hunt; anyone just a little toward the fringe will do. The tendency is within us all-- you and me, that nice lady down the road, and all our leaders, your HPS not immune. Humans are nervous creatures, quick to turn and eager to bite.
What are we to do about it?? Attend the beam in thine own, my friends. Do your best to make sure *you* are not the one kicking off the next witchcraze.
Perhaps we should all take it personally every time someone ends up as an impromptu barbecue, lest the next time it's brought home in a very personal way indeed.

They are talking about witches in a fairy tale manner. Alot of countries like India still have that fairy tale ideal about witches. Im not saying it was right, but what I am saying is that if someone were to kill a witch here it would mean they killed one of us as opposed to countries like that where their witches are fairy tale labels given to people acting shady for their culture. Once again I do not feel it was right, but you have to understand it from a cultural perspective. What this article really says is that people are not as educated about things of this nature as they should be in this day and age.

It's time for someone to create posters, t-shirts, buttons, stickers etc and give them away to everyone in India ... They would say (translated to local languages/alphabets of course) "WWGD?" !

When stories like this come out, I am not surprised at the ignorance and bias of those people that do this kind of thing, but I am saddened that instead of stepping forward into enlightenment, people seem to be stepping back into the shadows. She was no witch, but she was murdered. And my guess is that the witchcraft accusation was just a cover for something both petty and ridiculous.

We have seen many of these stories coming out of India. The whole story as described here is deplorable and, sadly, pretty typical and not surprising. I can't see an end to it there anytime soon. All I seem able to come up with is that I wish her rest and healing from this hard life and good journeys ahead. The ones who do this sort of thing will have their own debt to settle somewhere down the road. Blessings and Peace to her Spirit.
