The Daughter Deficit

Author: Tina Rosenberg   Source: New York Times Magazine

Title: THE DAUGHTER DEFICIT

In the late 1970s, a Ph.D. student named Monica Das Gupta was conducting anthropological fieldwork in Haryana, a state in the north of India. She observed something striking about families there: parents had a fervent preference for male offspring. Women who had given birth to only daughters were desperate for sons and would keep having children until they had one or two. Midwives were even paid less when a girl was born. “It’s something you notice coming from outside,” says Das Gupta, who today studies population and public health in the World Bank’s development research group. “It just leaps out at you.”

It is rarely good to be female anywhere in the developing world today, but in India and China the situation is dire: in those countries, more than 1.5 million fewer girls are born each year than demographics would predict, and more girls die before they turn 5 than would be expected. (In China in 2007, there were 1.73 million births — and a million missing girls.) Millions more grow up stunted, physically and intellectually, because they are denied the health care and the education that their brothers receive.

That if for some reason, all women were to disappear from the world, someone would eventually have to re-invent them.

I believe education will definitely help, but the education needs to be focused on eliminating the sick ideas which cause people to overvalue males and devalue females.

I see I need to post this quote again...

"Culture carries no privilege to exist. Cultures do not have value simply because they are. Some cultures, the world is better off without. I submit, for your consideration, the Imperial Order." - Kahlan Amnell, Terry Goodkind's "Soul of the Fire"

Just because something's been done a certain way for thousands of years doesn't make it right. Look at xian mythology for just three seconds and I'm proven right.

The Thing People Need To Understand Aug 20th. at 10:58:53 am EDT

is that in India, the girl normally becomes the property of the father's family. The more girls a couple has compared to boys, the worse off they will be in old age. the girls family has no real ties to their birth family unless the family of the son wants her to. that's the way it has been practised for thousands of years, and for those of us raised with western values, it makes no sense, but neither does marrying the partner of your choice to the people of India. The family is usually chosen at birth, or even before. that way, both families know what kind of family they are marrying into. The groom knows that he's getting a suitable mother to his future children, and the brides family know she'll be taken care of. Usually.
Blessed Be, and Namoskar

This is why China's easing up on the "one child" rule: The reds realize China's become a real sausage-fest.

Women the world over have borne the brunt of Patriarchial thinking in which women were chattels, babybearers, workhorses and even extravagant indulgences. Only in truly enlightened areas were they allowed an education, most of the time they were merely considered a means to an end otherwise. It took centuries of indoctrination for males to think that way, and to get women to agree with it, even half heartedly. It'll take years, perhaps centuries to change the customs and minds of both men and women to believe that daughters can be just as good as sons.
