Shaman Rituals Enjoyed As Cultural Tradition

Author: Kim Tae-Jong Source: Korea Times (S. Korea)

Title: SHAMAN RITUALS ENJOYED AS CULTURAL TRADITION
Fear comes from uncertainty. That might be one of the many reasons people started to personify natural phenomenon and mysterious beings and pray to them for blessings and help. Worship rituals have been developed into numerous forms for meeting those needs.
As shaman rituals, called ''gut'' in Korean, have been passed down for generations and vary in type and meaning depending on their different roles, they have also had a great influence on many cultural traditions.
Believed to have originated from Siberia and later been influenced by local Buddhism, Korean shamanism has developed differently in each region. But in most shaman rituals, a shaman becomes a medium for the spirit of the dead or gods to speak to the living in the performance of ritual dance and song. And the forms of shaman ceremonies are diverse depending on what kind of god a shaman invites and the main purpose of the ritual.

Isn't it interesting that the Korean word for shaman rituals is the same as a word we use for "instinct"? And instinct...spiritual instinct...is really what shamanism is, isn't it?
