Christianity, Modernization Ease Traditional Ancestor Worship

Author: Lim Bo-mi   Source: Yonhap News Agency (S Korea)

Title: CHRISTIANITY, MODERNIZATION EASE TRADITIONAL ANCESTOR WORSHIP

At Kim Hui-gon's house on a traditional holiday like Chuseok, the table full of exquisite dishes typically prepared for a memorial service for ancestors in South Korea is nowhere in sight.

"We haven't had the traditional memorial service for the past five generations in our family," Kim, a 25-year-old office worker, said. "Ever since our family members became Catholics, we simply prayed for our ancestors before having a big family meal on traditional holidays."

The way Kim's family conducts the memorial services that have been traditionally held in South Korean households on certain holidays underscores a growing trend to simplify service procedures.

As more people opt for simpler and more practical lifestyles, these services, which involve tedious and time-consuming food preparation and a complex service procedure, are considered too cumbersome and expensive.

The spread of Christianity -- Protestantism in particular -- is also adding fuel to changes to the traditional memorial service, which has strong traits of Confucianism.

The Whole Blaming-the-Christians Thing... Sep 18th. at 2:31:02 pm EDT

by Si-Set (Oshkosh, WI) - wc_xemail

The Christians weren't the first group to start chipping away at other cultures. What about all those PAGAN cultures that fought against each other, mixed into each other, and destroyed each other? Can't complain about them, can we... because we're under the false interpretation that they were us.

I agree that it's more modernization than anything. It's not just a religious issue.

I agree it's modernization at work and not Christianity.. we've become a society that doesn't want to have to worry about cumbersome things. That's why we eat fast food, make dinner in the microwave. I don't believe it's Christianity because many of them don't want to be bothered with going to church anymore. We live in a faster paced world in which we want to speed up everything.. including worship. However I do believe if they do not feel that such a cumbersome ceremony is necessary, then it probably isn't.

Not All Christianity's Fault . .. Sep 17th. at 9:41:41 pm EDT

Its not just Christianity, its modernisation. On one hand, its a bit sad that ancient traditions are being lost but on the other hand . . .. do they really matter? Its the feeling that counts. If people do not feel fulfilled by performing these ancient rituals anymore then they shouldn't do them. Religious rituals are for the humans performing them, not the gods or ancestors they are supposed to be for.

...and thus Christianity continues to slowly chip away at ancient traditions and cultures...
