Ritual for Afterlife Offers Family Fun in This Life

Title: RITUAL FOR AFTERLIFE OFFERS FAMILY FUN IN THIS LIFE
  Promise of a spiritual experience brought out Seoul’s families on a warm and sunny Sunday afternoon last weekend.
“San Ssikkim Kut: A Ritual for One’s Afterlife,” a shaman ritual performance by authentic priestesses, complete with commentary by a professor of musicology, was performed at the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts on Sunday, May 15.
“Kut” are ritual performances by shaman or priestesses. Whereas “Ssikim kut” are done for the spirits of the netherworld, “San Ssikim Kut” are performed for the living of this world. Either way, they typically last for hours, even days, and this year’s kut continued into the evening, more than six-hours long.
Kut are shaman rituals, and shamanism is Korea’s indigenous religion. It was practiced on the peninsula long before Christianity, Confucianism and even Buddhism, dating to pre-history.
