Shamanism, Oldest Healing Tradition In The World

Author: K.C. (bishnuji)   Source: OhmyNews (S. Korea)

Title: SHAMANISM, OLDEST HEALING TRADITION IN THE WORLD

Few cultures in the world lack an indigenous tradition of faith healers. While in broad outline Nepalese shamanism has been influenced by Tibetan and Indian traditions, a great variety of local Himalayan forms have evolved, corresponding to the diverse ethnic groups in the country. These practitioners are more commonly known as “Jhankri” and “Dhami.” The term shaman is of Siberian origin, encompassing a tremendous variety of forms. Shamanism is a spiritual practice of ancient civilizations and cultures and is the oldest healing tradition in the world.

A shaman is a man (or, less commonly a woman) who mediates between this world and the supernatural realm of ghosts, demons, witches, ancestors, and the like. The shaman’s task is to restore the proper relationship between the two worlds when it has been upset, usually garbed in a long robe and a headdress of peacock feathers protected by straps or bells, ironmongery, and cowries and armed with a flat, double-sided frame drum.

That was an interesting read. How many shamanic traditions are there at the present? Thanks for the great read. ^.^V

As a child, I went to a traditional healler whose head-dress included a concave reflector, and an electric light; he did some ritual Tapping of Knee, and Gazing of Throat.

As I understand the word, Shaman comes from the Mongol word for Rainbow, and a Shaman is one who's touched the Rainbow Bridge. Raven had been a Shaman, who'd danced as a Raven, after his adventure, but used his Art to awaken The Sun God, Dharma, who introduced Yoga, in the 83rd Century BC.

Shamanism isn't the oldest of Religions, however, and I think Belligerance might be older. The first man to honk back at a flock of Geese was healled of many things. We can't successfully address Alcoholics or Bullies, until we realize that these are religious practices.

Anyhow, Nepal is not very far from where Yoga was invented, so it's safe to assume that the local proffessionals have incorporated whatever they found to work, which might include such western practices as Tetracyclines and Pompous Blathering.
