Ghost Exhibit Shut After Clerics Protest

Author: AP   Source: Boston Globe (MA)

Title: GHOST EXHIBIT SHUT AFTER CLERICS PROTEST

A Malaysian state has closed down a museum exhibition on ghosts, ghouls and supernatural beings after Islamic clerics claimed it was detrimental to Muslims' faith, newspapers reported Saturday.

The exhibition at the state museum in southern Negeri Sembilan has drawn some 25,000 visitors since it opened March 10. But it has also attracted criticism from religious scholars who charged the show was un-Islamic and based in fantasy, the New Straits Times reported.

Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Rais Yatim also disapproved of the exhibition, saying it was not beneficial to the community.

But the museum has claimed its aim was to educate the public.

"But it has also attracted criticism from religious scholars who charged the show was un-Islamic and based in fantasy, the New Straits Times reported."

The same was said of Mohammed. Is it time for a new Prophet?

"The Negeri Sembilan state government decided to halt the show Friday after the National Fatwa Council ruled it was forbidden under Islam as it could undermine Muslims' faith, The Star newspaper reported."

I agree, the National Fatwa Council is forbidden under Islam, as it could undermine the Mohammedan's Faith.

"We don't want to promote a belief in 'tahyul' (supernatural) and 'khurafat' (superstition) which we do not know about. We do not need to focus on such things or play them up by having such exhibitions,"

The Prophet Jesus credited the Pharices for teaching such things, albeit with poor understanding, and Mohammed also spoke of such things.

"We do not want all the controversy surrounding this exhibition to drag on further, so the best thing is to stop the show,"

"The Show must go on;" Glory and Hosanna, see how it does; here we have the Voices of the Djinn!

Leaving It Open Still Wouldn't Have Hurt... Apr 15th. at 9:09:44 pm EDT

My feelings on this matter come from the fact that the Islamic faith is similar to xtianity in its total and irreversable conversion of people to its faith, sometimes (more often than not) by violent means. they have sought to destroy historical artifacts and places in order to rewrite history to favor itself and refuse to allow any discussion of other faiths within their midst. They have heavily suppressed free speech and movement of some of its members within its own areas. They have established a faction within itself to guarantee that their rules are not broken and punish apostasy with the harshest of means and also harshly punish those that do not follow their strictures exactly on dress or sexual activities.
They have often demanded that we tolerate their practices and faith -but in the same breath, they do not extend this same tolerance toward others even within their own faith. Maybe Muslims should not be allowed to attend the museum, but why not those of other faiths, or scholars that might find this of some historical import?
While, no doubt I will be told that it is extremists that do this-- I have seen little among any of the others-- and until I do, I remain adamant in my own position.

I think for the most part the comments have been fair. I realize they want to protect their point of view and religion

But I agree with the comment they are intollerent to others while expecting to be understood and given tollerence. ( I know I am spelling that wrong) sorry

Islamic peoples must learn the same respect for others we all must. And just because you view an exhibit does not mean you are tainted, nor does it mean you must adopt that belief.

Please get a grip.

Bright blessing to all, and I do mean everyone
Have a great day!

Before we all go up in arms in anti-Muslim bigortry once again, try and notice where this is coming from. This is a very conservative, and quite religiously based, country. It would be like placing a ghost exhibit in Tehran. Not all Muslims are like this because, like other faiths, it's a religion with a diversity of beliefs dependant on a diversity of ethnicities. Just because these people are rather intolerant doesn't justify your intolerance towards Muslims in the western world. I know that everyone want san excuse to complain about Muslims (well, most don't need an excuse, they just make things up) , try to take things in context.

That would have been interesting to see. Maybe they should make it a traveling exhibit.

Shutting something down because it was detrimental to a faith that thrives on warfare? Why does THIS seem so familiar...

Malaysia is quickly becoming the next Iran. Which country is next? The United States? That is what will happen if the fundies continue to infiltrate our government.

No Corner On The Market In Hypocrisy.... Apr 14th. at 10:38:12 pm EDT

In other words, it's unislamic to learn about other cultures and beliefs. They are afraid to be tainted by others-yet in the same breath, they want to be "understood".
Sounds a bit hypocritical.
