Malaysia Says No To Scary Books

Author: Kuala Lumpur, AP   Source: CBS News

Title: MALAYSIA SAYS NO TO SCARY BOOKS

Malaysia will restrict the importation or publishing of books judged to be too scary because they could be a bad influence, a minister said.

The restrictions would apply to books with elements of mystery, fantasy, the occult and superstition that were "calculated to entertain by frightening" the reader, Deputy Home Minister Chor Chee Heung was quoted as saying Thursday in The Star newspaper.

"These materials will create an unhealthy picture on the minds of the readers, and influence them by such far-fetched ghostly stories," Chor was quoted as saying.

Other Countries Nov 8th. at 2:40:19 am EST

by KarEEna (Perth, Australia) - wc_xemail

Sorry, I just had to add something. To the people who try to use this as an example of what will happen in other countries if you move out of the USA because of current policies . . . . you are sadly mistaken. I wonder if any of you realise that there are other countries besides the US with freedoms, Western values, etc? Australia, England, Canada, etc . . . . . I believe that when people mention wanting to move out of the US because of current policies they more often than not nominate one of the above mentioned countries as a place to go. So your linking that phenomenon with this particular story of censorship in Malaysia is a bit off kilter.

Missing The USA Nov 7th. at 5:32:09 pm EST

by Tinder (Guam) - wc_xemail

I am agreeing If you have a problem with the USA try living in another country for a while you will learn a great deal about freedom of choice. I feel for the poor Malasians who do not even know what they are missing out on.

But maybe that is where they are supposed to be this time around?
Just a thought

Our Future? Nov 7th. at 12:43:42 pm EST

by MistWolf (Illinois) - wc_xemail

It certainly makes me thankful for what we have in the U.S.
I hate to be cynical or negative, but how easily could this sort of thing be the future in the U.S.
Just something to ponder and work to prevent.

Huh? Nov 7th. at 1:50:57 am EST

Um, it appears that my last post to this article was removed. I dont know why. I mentioned that the actions of the Malaysian government might explain why the Malaysian exchange students I encounter here seem painfully naive. I did NOT mean that as an insult to all Malaysian exchange students. I was just stating something I have observed . . . a lot of Malaysian exchange students here are very naive about a lot of things and it is obviously not their fault . . . their government stops any knowledge other than what they think is *acceptable* from coming into Malaysia. It stands to reason that when they get to a country like Australia they would seem naive to those of us who haven't been sheltered to that extreme by the government. Saying someone is naive is vastly different from insulting their intelligence or calling them ignorant. Naive implies that they just havent been exposed to very much which is exactly what happens when a government censors things as much as theirs does. BTW, I never said they stay that way. Actually, quite the opposite . . . and a lot of them end up not wanting to go home at the end of their studies (one girl I worked with cried for a week when she got back to Singapore after graduation) . Anyway, the point was that I was not being racist, I was simply mentioning something I noticed and how this sort of thing could explain it. If anything, it was a slight to the draconian policies of their government. I'm a bit confused as to why my comment would be removed.

Subjective Nov 7th. at 1:13:08 am EST

Isn't scary subjective? I mean, personally, I find clowns and the circus much scarier than Dungeons and Dragons.

Puh-please! Give Me A Break! Nov 7th. at 1:05:10 am EST

by LadyMoonDragon (PA, USA) - wc_xemail

Would someone please tell me exactly what are "scary books"? *laughing* I mean seriously what are these people trying to do?
Maybe pagans should restrict any "Muslim books" they come across. JK! But in all seriousness, how can these people expect anyone with an intelligient mind to follow through with something so ridiculous! No wonder why the world is the way it is when we have people trying to bash other religions just because they might be differant from their own...

Gee, America Doesn't Look So Bad Now. Nov 7th. at 12:38:00 am EST

For everyone who complains about how hard you have it in this country and how the U.S. has gone to hell in a handbasket and you would just as soon run away to some other country than serve your own then here is the place to go.

Destruction To Censorship! Nov 6th. at 8:08:26 pm EST

How dare these government pigs claim to know what should and should not be read by their people? Scum.
