Here Comes The Sun, Again

Title: HERE COMES THE SUN, AGAIN
The winter solstice, which happens on December 21 or 22 in the northern hemisphere, is a significant event for modern-day practitioners of pagan rites. For these people it is not only a turning point in the annual pattern of days and nights – the winter solstice is the day of the longest night - it's also a reminder of mankind's connection to the animals, plants, and natural processes of our planet.
A bearded man stands on a blowy beach in San Francisco, California. He raises his arms and calls upon pagan deities of earth, water, and stone. For modern pagans this kind of ritual is important in marking the solstice and seeking assurance that winter will end.
Rites like this have been carried out for thousands of years, according to Bryan Davison, the former site manager and ‘Inspector of Stonehenge', the famous prehistoric circle of giant standing stones in southern England. Stonehenge itself may have been built as a system of markers to help predict when the solstice ceremonies should take place.

Now we are at the pinnacle of dark and light but we are whirling toward light, toward Spring.
Gaia -- our planet, our home -- the living system within which we are and without which we would not exist -- is sacred. Sacred in the meaning of deepest, truest and most powerfully important as well as the meaning "spiritual center".
We're Pagan. We know the mythologies, etc. Being conscious of ourselves as only a part of Her -- and ourselves as inextricably woven into the systems which include wind and water, tree and stream, bears and ladybugs, prairies and earthquakes. And wildfires and Spring rain. Everything. And this Earth, this Gaia in Her dance with Sun And Moon is in perfect changing harmony.
We are home. We have forgotten who we are within our only true home in the universe. Our intellection has stolen away our understanding of this so that we feel weak and embattled rather than challenged and strong. Rather than embracing our deep instinctive beauty and power we have run after abstracts of life and now we are dying of ourselves. Like the drunk in an alley who has come down to drinking rubbing alcohol.
We are the Pagans. We are part of the Great Lord of the Forests, the Animal Master. We are part of the green fields, the Corn Man. We are part of the Spring Maiden, the DiaMater Mother of the Grain. We are part of the mountains, the oceans.
True and bold, Pagans must lead the way if we truely are more than costume party addicts. Are we truely dedicated to the Old Gods? On the deepest levels?
2004 comes to us with warnings that the British Isles and (of course) Ireland, along with the rest of Northern Europe stands the likelihood of entering into the beginning stages of an Ice Age within the lifetime of many of our readers because of the deeper effects of the melting ice caps.
We face ever greater atmosphere and land poisoning damage to our bodies -- diseases of biobreakdown are becoming common. Cancer incidence is way up.
Have you been saying "Oh well, even if we destroy the only biotic community we could ever live in and poison everything Earth will just create another one." ? I've heard people who professed to be Pagan say this.
Face it, She will forever recreate. But can we help to bring about the change which will save THIS living system? Enough of it that it can heal, recover, become perhaps not the same as the original (you can never go back) but something healthy? Would you turn your back on the chance it can be done?
Start studying the problem if you aren't already. We are Her warriors and our battle is for a new sort of culture, a new vision for the sciences, a new and more harmonious way of being human. Of being a species sympathetic and symbiotic to our fellow species within the arms of the Great Mother.
